Shirley Pointer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by A. D. Porter & Sons Funeral Home - Southeast on Mar. 13, 2026.
"For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." 2 Corinthians 5:1 NKJV.

On Monday, March 9, 2026, Shirley Smith-Pointer, or "Shirley Finey/Aunt CeCe/Aunt Shirley," as she was affectionately called, gained her wings. Our beloved mother, sister, aunt and great friend went to her eternal home with God.

Shirley entered this life on July 28, 1940 as the first child of Emile (Papa Smitty) and Galilee (Mama Bee) Smith. She attended Central High School (1958) and the University of Louisville.

Professing her love for Jesus Christ at Young's Chapel A.M.E. Church, she was an active member, serving faithfully as Sunday School teacher, finance committee member, church secretary, steward, and usher. She also represented her church as a delegate at conferences.

Shirley was blessed with one daughter Sherri' Antoinette Pointer. The two were inseparable - from church meetings to Cheddar's, hair appointments to doctor appointments, Shirley and Sherri' were the dynamic duo at every mall in the city. As much as they excelled in the art of shopping, they were also fierce supporters of the arts, often attending plays.

Retiring after over thirty years with the US Social Security Administration office, Shirley was skilled at typing and stenography, and applied it at meetings and seminars. She spent many years serving the National Council of Negro Women, where she was once local president.

Shirley is now walking up the King's highway to meet her parents and younger brother Norman (Meatie) Smith, and leaving to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Sherri'; caring siblings, Nolan A. Smith (JoDale) and Vickie Mahin; and a host of nephews and nieces, and other family members and friends.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God." Matthew 5:8 NKJV.
