Shirley Anne Vale, 89, of
Cape Coral, FL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Gulf Coast Village, where she had resided for nearly three years.
Born on July 29, 1935, in Akron, Ohio, Shirley was the daughter of Ralston and Effie Vale, both of whom preceded her in death. She was raised alongside her beloved sister, Sandra Vale-Patterson, who also predeceased her. Shirley attended Ohio University in Athens from 1954 to 1956, where she studied philosophy, later nurturing a lifelong passion for art under the mentorship of Seleta Philibin. Her artistic journey would become one of the great joys and defining aspects of her life.
Shirley married John R. Prysi on June 15, 1957, in Parma, Ohio, and together they raised two daughters, Nichole Lee and Cheri Monique. Following their separation in 1971, she married Stephen P. Karales in 1972. Though their marriage ended in 1975, Shirley's life continued to evolve with creativity and care.
Later that year, Shirley relocated to Lee County, Florida, and began a meaningful role as Public Relations Liaison for the Lee County Humane Society-an ideal position that reflected her compassion for animals and people alike. Simultaneously, she pursued her artistic vision and became an integral member of the artist co-op that founded Tower Gallery. Over the course of 29 years, Shirley contributed to the gallery not only as an exhibiting artist but also in multiple leadership roles. Her work received accolades in juried exhibitions and was featured in Artists of Florida Magazine. Today, her art lives on in private collections across the U.S. and abroad. Beyond painting, Shirley's creative spirit found expression in countless projects-from intricate dollhouses and cartoons to elaborate holiday crafts. Her grandchildren fondly recall the "OZ kits" she prepared for them at Christmastime, filled with supplies for crafting handmade ornaments-a cherished family tradition.
Shirley will be remembered for her warm, thoughtful presence and intellectual curiosity. She was always open to deep conversation, known for her emotional intelligence and her love of philosophical reflection.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Cheri Clearwater of
Cape Coral, FL; grandchildren Rachelle Clearwater-Yusufbekov of West Palm Beach, FL; Brian Serena of Fort Myers, FL; Scott Serena of North Fort Myers, FL; and Michelle Graham of
Cape Coral, FL. Shirley also leaves behind ten great-grandchildren, who will carry her legacy of love and creativity forward. She was recently preceded in death by her daughter Nichole Lee Serena and beloved partner of 47 years, David E. Williams. A celebration of Shirley's life will be held on Saturday, June 21st at 1:30 PM at Fuller Metz Funeral Home on Del Prado Blvd in
Cape Coral, FL, with a reception to follow.
