Sierra Caldwell Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jun. 16, 2025.
AKWESASNE – Sierra Johnson-Sunday Caldwell, 36, Wolf Clan, began her journey to the Spirit World early Friday morning, June 13, 2025, under the light of the Strawberry Moon. Though challenged by chronic health issues, she walked through life as a true force: resilient, intuitive, loving, and endlessly creative. She moved with a brave heart and a sharp mind. She loved fiercely, and was a gifted artist who poured her soul into her creations. Sierra had an amazing voice and a deep love for singing, especially traditional songs. Her spirit brought light to those around her.
Sierra was born on September 22, 1988, in Newburgh, New York, to Wanda Johnson and Eric Sunday. She proudly earned her Associate's Diploma in Mental Health and Addiction from St. Lawrence College. Sierra dedicated her career as an Addictions Case Manager with the Wholistic Health and Wellness Program at the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne until her health required her to step back.
One of Sierra's greatest joys was the birth of her daughter, Ember, whom she loved with all her heart. On February 22, 2022, at 2:22 in the afternoon, she joyfully celebrated a beautiful ceremony as she married Jonathan P. Caldwell in Akwesasne.
Sierra is survived by her husband, Johnny Caldwell; her daughter, Ember Johnson; her mother, Wanda Johnson of Akwesasne; her father, Eric (Linda) Sunday of Akwesasne; her maternal grandparents, Tracy Johnson (Cathy) of Tuscarora and Suzan Garcia of Akwesasne; her paternal grandmother, Rose Marie Sunday of Akwesasne; her sisters, Jamaica Johnson, Brooklyn Johnson, and Marina Johnson-Zafiris; her brothers, Eric Johnson-Sunday, Angello (Ashley) Johnson, and Bronson Sunday; chosen sisters, Rena Pat and Sheena White; and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is also survived by her father and mother-in-law, Jonathan "Sonny" and Sue Caldwell; her sisters-in-law, Carrie Caldwell, Jeannie Tarbell, Angela Caldwell, and Kristen Caldwell (Honko); her brother-in-law, James (Chantalle) Caldwell; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sierra was predeceased by her paternal grandfather Wilbert "Willie" Bay, her uncle Tyson Johnson, and infant son Geronimo Johnson. We find comfort in knowing they are there to greet her on her journey.
Friends may call at the Kanien'kehaka Kaianereh'kowa Kanonsesneh beginning at 3:00 PM on Tuesday until 11:00 AM on Thursday, when her funeral ceremony will be held.
