Sigolwide B. Aremo, a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife, and a teacher born on November 29, 1959, to Hazel M. Burns (preceded in death) and Otto Wooten Sr (preceded in death), in Houston, TX, left this world on July 22, 2025. She was 65.
As a little girl, you could find Sigolwide playing with her cousins or rough housing with her brothers. Sigolwide spent time in church as a child, where she enjoyed learning about scriptures and participating in reciting passages for Easter. She continued to study the bible and research different religions, to help bring clarity to her belief in God.
Sigolwide had her first child Aziza Willis-Aremo (Tiffani) and began to attend Texas Southern University where she met her husband Charles Otieno Aremo (preceded in death). Through this union Dinah Aremo and Hazel Aremo were born. Sigolwide traveled with her family to Detroit, Michigan where she received a master's degree in biochemistry. She started working in Detroit as a chemist, at the Detroit Water and Sewerage plant. She later received her master's in education and began teaching at Aisha Shule. She loved learning and focused on children gaining knowledge for development.
Sigolwide, affectionately called Dee-Dee by family and Mama Sigolwide by students, has always been active in her community. She was a member and secretary with the United African Community Organization (UACO) and devoted her time to supporting minorities and people who struggled in her community. She was an avid reader, and her studies included various topics, which included religion, science, politics, and African history. She had an unusual sense of humor that could always make people laugh, when things were hard. A conversation with Sigolwide could include a discussion on political issues or a story about world topics and how it affected others. It would seem random, but there was always some meaning in the message.
Sigolwide is preceded in death by mother Hazel Burns, her father Otto Wooten Sr her husband Charles Otieno Aremo, her brothers Michael Jackson, Cornell Wooten, and sister Phyllis Ann Wheatley. Sigolwide will be missed by her family and the community. She is survived by her three children Aziza Willis-Aremo (Natasha), Dinah Aremo, Hazel Aremo; her granddaughter Victoria Turner, her siblings Debbie Phillips, Jaqueline Misher, Cheryl Wooten, Otto Wooten Jr (Jeanetta), Tammy Buster (Jason), Rodney Wooten, Roman Wooten, friends, extended family and loved ones.
"My mom always told me she would be my friend to the end until we die – and I believed her." – Aziza Willis-Aremo
"She left a legacy behind of greatness, but we truly know who she was, and we still love her no matter all good or bad she is still our mom." – Dinah Aremo
"I remember one day when we were sitting across from each other and just chatting about something I guess, but I was then very mesmerized by how beautiful she was. Everyone who knows her knows that she has long locs, but she almost never lets them down. She kept them in a long braid or always tied them up in a headwrap, but that day, she let them down and I saw her. I saw her childish innocence coupled with her relentless curiosity, just in that moment. She always wanted something to do and somewhere to go. At heart, she was like "the ultimate" adventurer." – Hazel Aremo.
