Snowden Moon passed away peacefully at his home on October 27th, 2024. Snowden was born on January 12th, 1931, to Curtis Moon and Lorana Cleo Grasty in Lawrence, KS. Snowden was married to his wife Jeanne for nearly 70 years. Snowden was a member of First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines in Johnston, IA. While active in the church, he had been Sunday School Superintendent and a Sunday School teacher for many years. He taught school in Kansas starting in a one room schoolhouse before moving to Des Moines, IA to continue teaching. Snowden was a teacher and principal before retiring from education after 41 years. He received the Golden Apple Award for teachers, was a life NEA member, a member of Phi Delta Kappa, and a past Mason. While he had attended Arizona State University & Drake University, Snowden ultimately graduated from Ottawa University and Kansas State University with a master's in education. He served in the National Guard in Kansas and Iowa.
He worked at Hy-Vee for over 15 years after retirement. Snowden considered it as one of his favorite jobs as he shared smiles with every delivery. He volunteered for many years for Orchard Place, the Blood Center, Salvation Army, and enjoyed helping make quilts for church. He loved to read, collect stamps, and do word searches. When teaching, he loved to take pictures and make slides of nature for Science Class. Snowden loved to repair and refinish furniture along with painting houses. Snowden had a workshop and made many items for craft shows that he attended with Jeanne. He loved playing games, especially cribbage, and enjoyed a nice walk after a good dessert. Snowden liked to travel and made many friends while on his trips. He took pride in his yard and taught his grandchildren how to mow. Snowden enjoyed playing sports with his grandsons and attending their events. "Pa" had a special place in his heart for all his grandchildren.
Snowden was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jimmy, and his wife Jeanne. Snowden is survived by his daughter Marsha (Larry), Sharon of Des Moines, IA, granddaughter Michelle (Randy) Schilling of Bondurant, IA, grandsons Robert Evans of Des Moines, IA and David (Faren) Abbott of Nashville, TN; great grandchildren Hannah, Micaela (Carter), Matthew, Savannah and Haileigh, great great granddaughter Raelynn and many extended family members and their pets.
A special thanks to all the staff at Ramsey Village Continuing Care Center and St. Croix Hospice team. He touched many people's lives who often stated, "You'll never meet a man like Snowden, he's a one-of-a-kind guy."
Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church 8250 NW 62nd Ave, Johnston, IA 50131 on December 5th, 2024, from 4-7pm. Graveside services will be held at Glendale Cemetery 4909 University Ave, Des Moines, IA 50311 on December 6th, 2024, at Noon.

I had planned to pay respects today but didn´t make it. I visited with Snowden when visiting my sister ant Ramsey and he was still such a pleasant man. May you have many fond memories of times past. Sharon McGraw.

Snowden was so polite and respectful when he made deliveries at the stage door of DMPA.
