Solveig "Dolly" Marie Koppang, 87, of Portland, North Dakota, formally of Hope, ND was born on December 31, 1937 to Christian and Nora Koppang in rural Portland, North Dakota. Solveig graduated in 1956 from Mayville High School and attended Mayville Teachers College for one year.
On July 16, 1957, Solveig was united in marriage to Marlin Flaten at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Portland. To this union 4 children were born: Keith, Curtis, Neil and Lori. Marlin and Solveig started out their married life living in the Mayville-Portland area. In 1966, they moved to Hope where they operated a farm, milked cows, raised pigs and beef cattle. Solveig was an active farm wife from driving truck to doing chores.
Solveig taught Sunday School at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hope, ND for 25 years. She was active in Ladies Aide, circle, choir and quilting at Redeemer and Aurdal Lutheran Church, Portland, ND. In later years, Solveig volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Solveig worked at the Luther Memorial Home as a CNA for almost 20 years.
Solveig was a terrific cook, baker and canner. There was always cookies and coffee ready and she could “whip up” a meal at a moment’s notice. She loved to laugh and had a very caring heart. All the kids, grandkids and great-grandkids knew where to find the candy drawer.
Solveig’s heart was truly complete when she became a grandma to 12 grandchildren, Her and Marlin lived for attending their grandchildren’s school, church and 4-H events. She loved babysitting for the grandkids and they could talk her into almost anything. Marlin and Solveig retired in 1998 and moved to Portland, ND.
Solveig is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, Marlin; her children: Curtis (Donna) Flaten of Hope, ND, Neil (Lisa) Flaten of West Fargo, ND and Lori (Kelvin) Dalby of Fargo, ND; daughter-in-law: Susan Flaten of Hope, ND; grandkids: Timothy (Allie) Flaten, Sarah (Adam) Kubista, Cody Flaten, Natasha (Jerod) Basol, Chance Flaten, Connor (Hannah Pierson) Flaten, Josie (Andy Muhs) Flaten, Preston (Anna) Flaten, Andrea (Steve) Haverkamp, Spencer (Kendra) Flaten, Taylyn (Alec) Voss, Rylee (Lydia Nelson) Thompson; great grandchildren: Natalee, Abigail and Bridget Kubista, Lillian, Nash, Vaya and Remi Basol, Emerson Flaten, Edyn, Bryer and Halle Flaten, Caylee, Lawson and Brooks Haverkamp, Emmytt, Myles and Rawley Flaten and Kase Thompson; sister: Helen Strand of Mayville, ND; sisters-in-law: Marilyn Koppang of Mayville, ND and Judy Koppang of Wahpeton, ND.
She was proceeded in death by her parents; son: Keith; grandchildren: Courtney and Ethan Thompson; 5 brothers: Alton, Victor, Gordon, Myron and Richard; sister: Audrey Erickson; sisters and brother-in-laws; Francis Koppang, Phyllis Koppang, Lloyd Erickson and Ardell Strand; also numerous extended family and friends.
The family of Solveig would like to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley, Mayo Clinic, and Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center.
Visitation: Will be 5–7 PM with a 7:00 PM public prayer service on Monday, May 12, 2025 at the Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral Service: Will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at the Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland, ND.
Burial: Will be in the Trinity Cemetery in Portland, ND.
