Sonny Lee Stringer, age 88, of Republic, Missouri, passed away February 18, 2024, peacefully at Sonshine Manor in Republic, Missouri. He was born February 28, 1935 in Williford, Arkansas, to Sonny Lloyd and Josephine Aaron (Hurst) Stringer.
He is survived by sons Kent Stringer and wife, Suzanne; Kirk Stringer and fiancée Alicia Dinges; Preston Stringer and wife, Angi; sister Martha Eddlemon and brother Bill Stringer and wife, Karen. Sonny and Mary had 8 grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Earnestine (Barnes) Stringer, parents, Sonny and Josephine Stringer and grandson Luke Stringer.
Sonny graduated from Willow Springs High School in 1953 and married his high school sweetheart Mary Barnes on May 22, 1953. He had an illustrious high school football career in Willow Springs as well as being a basketball and track standout. Sonny received a football scholarship to the University of Missouri in Columbia where he played for four years under Coach Don Faurott. After graduation, he went on to coach football at Hannibal, MO and Fredricktown, MO. Sonny then moved to Springfield, MO and was an assistant coach for 5 years at Glendale High School before becoming head coach at Parkview High School for 6 more years. He then retired from coaching to watch his sons participate in their high school and college sports. Sonny was an avid Missouri Tiger and MSU Bear fan. He loved to play golf, hunt and fish.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at Meador's Funeral Home in Republic, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to South Haven Baptist Church, Springfield MO or Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Cabool, MO.
