Sgt. Payton Alexander Ripper, 23, passed away on July 2, 2025, in Bethesda, Maryland. Born on September 12, 2001, in Springfield, Missouri, Payton lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep sense of care for those around him.
A proud graduate of Glendale High School in Springfield, Payton demonstrated leadership and commitment from an early age. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America-an achievement that reflected his determination and willingness to serve others. He was also active on the Glendale Falcon's Wrestling Team and played cello for the Glendale High School Orchestra.
In 2020, Payton answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. Over five years of honorable service, he rose to the rank of Sergeant and specialized in aviation electronics for the Osprey V-22 aircraft. His technical skill and steadfast work ethic made him a valued member of his unit and a trusted comrade among his peers.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Payton was known for his unique sense of humor and loving nature. He had a gift for lifting spirits and bringing laughter into any room. Whether through late-night gaming sessions or animated rounds of Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, he built lasting connections with those who shared his passions. Music was another joy in his life-he loved attending concerts and immersing himself in the energy of live performance.
Payton's caring spirit extended deeply to his family. He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Toni Ripper; sisters Susan Moore and Leah Tonche; brothers Harlen Moore, David Ripper, and William Ripper; and grandparents Don and Dani Underwood; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends. His father, Jason Moore, preceded him in death.
A visitation honoring Sgt. Payton Alexander Ripper is being held on July 24, 2025 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home, Springfield, MO.
Those who knew Payton will remember him as someone who gave freely of himself-through service to his country, loyalty to his friends, and love for his family. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his loss.
