It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sophia Wangui Kamau, a cherished

mother to Wangui Kang’acha (Silver Spring) and Kamau Kang’acha (Silver Spring), and a

doting grandmother to Christopher (Chris) Kamau Wint. She was married to the late

Sophia was the beloved daughter of the late David Kirui Hiuhu and Teresia Karagi of

Kawangware, Nairobi, Kenya. Sister to the late Godfrey Hiuhu Kirui.

She is survived by her children, her grandchild, her mom & her siblings Catherine Wanjiru

Kuria, Peter Muthondu, Agnes Kariuki, and Lucy Nyokabi Kirui. She is also survived by her -

in-laws Jane Hiuhu, Daniel Kuria and Isaac Kariuki. She was a loving Niece, Auntie, Cousin

and friend to many.

impacted the lives of countless children in Maryland & DC. Her work extended far beyond her

professional career—she was an active and engaged member of her community, known for her

boundless kindness, compassion, and unwavering positivity.

Looking back on Sophia’s life, we remember her as a PILLAR in the community and an inspiring

woman who truly lived life to the fullest. She found joy in helping others and made a lasting

impression with her magnetic personality and radiant smile. Whether volunteering at the local

food bank, organizing fundraising events for charitable causes, or simply offering a Safe landing

Sophia's legacy extends beyond her volunteer work; she was a natural connector, bringing

people together and fostering lifelong friendships. Her warmth and ability to make everyone

feel valued created a strong sense of community that transcended all boundaries.

Her life serves as a powerful reminder to live with purpose and to treat every day as an
