It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sophia Wangui Kamau, a cherished
mother to Wangui Kang’acha (Silver Spring) and Kamau Kang’acha (Silver Spring), and a
doting grandmother to Christopher (Chris) Kamau Wint. She was married to the late
Kang’acha Kamau.
Sophia was the beloved daughter of the late David Kirui Hiuhu and Teresia Karagi of
Kawangware, Nairobi, Kenya. Sister to the late Godfrey Hiuhu Kirui.
She is survived by her children, her grandchild, her mom & her siblings Catherine Wanjiru
Kuria, Peter Muthondu, Agnes Kariuki, and Lucy Nyokabi Kirui. She is also survived by her -
in-laws Jane Hiuhu, Daniel Kuria and Isaac Kariuki. She was a loving Niece, Auntie, Cousin
and friend to many.
A dedicated educator, Sophia spent many years in the United States, where she positively
impacted the lives of countless children in Maryland & DC. Her work extended far beyond her
professional career—she was an active and engaged member of her community, known for her
boundless kindness, compassion, and unwavering positivity.
Looking back on Sophia’s life, we remember her as a PILLAR in the community and an inspiring
woman who truly lived life to the fullest. She found joy in helping others and made a lasting
impression with her magnetic personality and radiant smile. Whether volunteering at the local
food bank, organizing fundraising events for charitable causes, or simply offering a Safe landing
space for people immigrating to the US, Sophia left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Sophia's legacy extends beyond her volunteer work; she was a natural connector, bringing
people together and fostering lifelong friendships. Her warmth and ability to make everyone
feel valued created a strong sense of community that transcended all boundaries.
Her life serves as a powerful reminder to live with purpose and to treat every day as an
opportunity to make a positive difference in the world.
Sophia peacefully passed away at her home in Silver Spring on December 25, 2024, after
celebrating Christmas Eve surrounded by her loved ones.
She will be laid to rest is on Friday 3rd January 2025, starting at 10 am.
