Sophie Kilbourn, a centenarian of remarkable spirit and joy, passed away peacefully at the age of 102 on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Vassar Comfort Care in her lifelong hometown of Vassar, Michigan. Born on December 7, 1922, to the late Joe and Anna (Balinski) Szymzak, Sophie's life was a dedication, to love, and vibrant community engagement.
Sophie's journey began in the heart of Vassar, where she was not only born and raised but also where she established her own roots. She married Lenwell Kilbourn, and they were nearly married for five decades until Lenwell's passing in 1997.
A testament to her work ethic and commitment, Sophie was a long-standing employee at Grede Foundry, dedicating over 30 years of service before retiring in 1975. Her professional life was marked by diligence and camaraderie, traits that were deeply appreciated by her colleagues and friends.
Sophie's zest for life was evident in her numerous interests and hobbies. She was an avid golfer, winning the club championship several times. Her prowess on the golf course was matched by her skill in bowling, where she not only excelled but also earned her place in the bowlers' hall of fame. Sophie's love for travel took her to sunny Florida, where she enjoyed the warmth and relaxation.
Her social nature kept her active and engaged throughout her 102 years. She took immense pride in her home and meticulously cared for her lawn, creating a welcoming space for family and friends.
Sophie was a trailblazer in her own right, having purchased her own home before marriage-a remarkable feat at the time. This accomplishment was a source of great pride for her and served as an inspiration to those around her.
She was a beacon of light to her family, who will miss her dearly. She leaves behind a loving family, including her great-niece Julie (Eric) Clauss, nieces Joanne (Mike) Amend, Susan (Thomas) Whitney, nephew William Barrett, great-nephew Joseph Amend, and great-niece Kimberly (Elliot) Vinson. Sophie's legacy continues to grow with many great-great-nieces and nephews and the joyful anticipation of a great-great-great-nephew on the way.
In addition to her husband and parents, Sophie was preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph, Edward, Anne, Jean, and Betty. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is reunited with them once more. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories shared and the lives she touched. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the century of memories she leaves behind. Sophie's legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, just as her presence always did.
Sophie's family would like to thank the staff of Vassar Comfort Care and her caregiver Michele for their wonderful care.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home - Reese Chapel, 9940 Saginaw St, Reese.
