Spencer Raymond "Punk" Carpenter, 76, of Racine, passed away surrounded by family at 2:20 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2023, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Born March 20, 1947, he was the son of the late James Carpenter and Betty Beegle Carpenter. After graduating from Southern High School in 1965, Spence joined the United States Army and earned his Ranger Tab and was then sent to Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge as well as many other personal and Campaign awards. He obtained the Rank of Captain while serving abroad and at home for 12 years in the United States military, He was an integrated part of the defense of this great nation that he loved so much. He was honored for his faithful service and devotion to our Nation by Southern Local School District on their yearly Veterans Day Assembly. After leaving the military, Spence began working in the oil and gas industry. He purchased The SUN FUN gas station and Carpenter well services, as well as a co-owner of American Wireline Services. After those endeavors, he then went to work for The J.D. Drilling Company, working his way up to Vice President of the Company while overseeing seeing day to day operations. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Cheryl, who loved him dearly, and children Jim (Christy) Carpenter, Beckie (Butch) Barton, Michael Amos, John Amos, Annie (Steve) Lemaster, Jason (Kathryn) Carpenter, Jenny Kay Harmon, as well as his 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much. He is also survived by his sister, Cricket Adkins, and brother-Jim and Linda Diddle. Spence also had four Newfoundland's, Buddy, Lilly, Izzy and Captain Ranger that were his pride and joy! A Memorial Service will be held 1100, October 14th at the Racine Ohio American Legion hall. If Attending the memorial please bring a covered dish, Spence loved the 4th of July and a wake is planned at the house this coming July 4th to celebrate his life! Bring a chair and a story!!!
