Spencer Robert Howes, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and devoted member of his community, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on August 1, 1938, in Baltimore, MD, Spencer's life was one of dedication, service, and boundless love.
Growing up in a nurturing household with his adoptive parents, Virgil and Genevieve Howes, Spencer learned the value of hard work and community spirit at a young age. This foundation served him well as he took to managing the family farm and later in his roles beyond the agricultural world. Spencer's persistence and work ethic were exemplified in his long tenure as a sales representative for Warner-Lambert Pharmaceuticals in the American Chicle Division, where he dedicated 23 years. His commitment to his roots was evident as he continued the legacy of farming, raising purebred cattle, and serving as a Calvert County School Bus Contractor.
Spencer's contribution to his community was immense. A charter member and past president of the Optimist Club of Calvert County, he worked tirelessly to bring out the best in people. As a respected member of the Maryland School Bus Association and faithful congregant of the First Baptist Church of Princess Anne, he left a positive imprint on many lives. He was recognized with the Golden Merit Award from the National Transportation Association, an honor mirroring his unwavering dedication.
He also served his country with pride as a member of the Army National Guard for eight years, displaying the same level of commitment and love for his nation as he did for his local community.
Beyond his public services, Spencer was a loving husband to Judith Ann Howes for 57 remarkable years. He was a guiding light in the life of his daughter, Anne-Meredith Webster, and her husband Chris, and a doting grandfather to Hannah Ashley Webster. The joy he shared with his twin brother, Orville Herbert Wells, who preceded him in death, still resonated in his fond recollections. Spencer was also a cherished brother-in-law to Paul R. Wise.
Spencer's interests were simple yet profound. He loved going on drives, indulging in TV shows, and engaging in cherished conversations at the local breakfast club in Princess Anne. His travels across the United States, especially to Florida in his RV were highlights of his adventurous spirit. Spencer's love for his cat Pooh, granddog Echo, and the simple pleasures of life were evident to all who knew him.
