Stanley Kenneth Horton, 89, of
Panama City, Florida passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, surrounded by his three children. Stan was born in Newport, New Hampshire to William F. Horton, Sr. and Viola Davis Horton.
Stan was known for his mechanical ability, reliability, family-oriented disposition, and his enjoyment of sports and recreation. He was also known for his playful and teasing demeanor, his kind smile and blue eyes, and for being someone who would come to your rescue with a helping hand. Stan and his wife of 64 years, Shirley, were generous with their resources, often offering hospitality for extended periods of time to those in need.
After graduating from Charlestown High School in Charlestown, NH in 1954, Stan joined the United States Air Force. Stan worked on several types of airplanes; he specialized as an automatic flight control systems specialist and technician. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and retired from the Air Force in July of 1978, after 24 years of active duty. After retirement, Stan had a second career in inventory control at auto dealerships' parts departments.
Stan and Shirley were married at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in 1960, in Charlestown, NH. While stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Springfield, MA, their first daughter Sheryl Kay was born. Stacy Karen was born 18 months later in Chateauroux-Deols, France. In November of 1965, during the height of the Cold War, Stan was stationed at RAF Mildenhall, England. From April 1967 to the autumn of 1969, Stan was stationed at McCoy AFB, Orlando, Florida. Stan and Shirley welcomed a son, Shawn Kenneth, in 1969. Stan was also stationed at Korat AFB in Thailand, Kincheloe AFB in Michigan, Hellenikon AFB, Athens Greece. In July of 1977, Stan began his last tour of duty at Tyndall AFB in
Panama City, Florida.
Stan was predeceased by his parents, his brother William (Bill) Horton and sister-in-law Sarah Nelson Horton, his sister Faye Sydney and her husband Charles Sydney, brother-in-law Charles Rogers and niece Jocelyn Sydney Warrenburg. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Shirley and their three children Shawn Horton, Stacy Horton Wegner (Matthew Wegner) and Sheryl Horton Chong (Stephen Chong); eight grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, extended family; his Jenks Church of Christ family and friends at Brookdale Assisted Living Facility.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025, 11:00 A.M. at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with full Military Honors Ceremony and inurnment of ashes to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, located at 2403 Harrison Avenue.
