Stephen Barnard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services LTD. on Jul. 31, 2023.
Stephen Alan Barnard, 81, of Schaumburg formerly of Lake in the Hills, and originally from Greenwood, Indiana. Beloved husband of Gail E. Barnard, nee Gramling for over 59 years. Devoted father of Timothy (Kristin) Barnard, Charles (Marla) Barnard and Karen (Tom) Zapinski. Loving grandfather of Jillian, Morgan, Evan, Hannah (Samuel), Emma (Isaiah), Rachel, Alan and Paige. Cherished son of the late Franklin and Deloris Barnard. Dear brother of Pat (Jim) Baker. And Dear relative of many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Steve was a devoted public high school educator in Michigan for over 34 years teaching literature, writing and composition to countless students including his children. He extended his love of learning into Scouting with semi-official 'Scout dad' and formal Troop leadership positions, and working for Habitat for Humanity on local projects. His favorite hobby was 'anything trains' whether visiting a rail yard, eating a picnic lunch at a railroad crossing, reading up on the latest (or oldest) train technology, or bringing it all together with his extensive O-27 train layout. An avid hockey fan Steve was committed to the Detroit Red Wings and grew to appreciate other teams when 'local' changed from Michigan to the
Chicago area - including watching grandson Alan mind the net as a youth hockey goalie.
His favorite thing to do was spend time with family and/or his pups – of which he had several over the years. The love of his life was Gail, who he met when a junior at Purdue in 1962. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend whose demeanor was always pleasant and whose presence was always comforting. He is missed but certainly never forgotten.
Services and interment will all be private. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Please visit our website for updates on service dates and times. In lieu of flowers donations to any local Habitat for Humanity organization are appreciated.
