Stephen Foxwell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Welch Funeral Home - Montross Chapel on Jan. 7, 2026.
Stephen Michael Foxwell, 72, of Montross passed away on New Years Day of 2026. Affectionately known as Michael to friends and family, he was the son of the late John "Franklin" Foxwell, Jr. and the late Shirley Helen Elaine Cusick Foxwell. He was the husband of Karen Ann Waterfield. Michael was the proud and loving father of John Foxwell.

Growing up on the Potomac River deeply shaped who Michael became. He grew up fishing and crabbing with his dad and stocking the family seafood business. He was always at home around boats and the water. Michael was keenly intelligent, capable with his hands, and very creative. With wood and patience, he created almost anything-each piece finished with quiet pride. He could build just about anything.

Unsurprisingly for someone as creative as Michael he began to look at wood as not only material for well-made carpentry projects, but as an artistic medium. He began to sculpt, turn and carve wood – using his knife, his chainsaw, and his Dremel, among other tools. Michael had the ability to look at a piece of wood and sense what was truly inside waiting to be expressed. Bowls, pumpkins, foxes, mermaids, eagles, and many other wondrous creatures emerged from the local cedar and pine as Michael coaxed them out and into life. Many of us are so much richer for having a piece of Michael's art in our homes and gardens.

Many people will miss Michael, but none more than his son John; his sister Karen; and his wife, Karen. He joins his parents, Franklin and Shirley and his brothers, Wesley and Kevin in Heaven.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Michael's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Nomini Baptist Church with the Reverend Steven Taylor officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a donation in his loving memory to the Nomini Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1955 Kings Highway, Montross, VA 22520
