Stephen Gibbs Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home - Greenville on Nov. 18, 2025.
Stephen L. Gibbs, of Lincoln, RI, passed away on November 15, 2025, 5 days before his 68th birthday.

Stephen graduated with the class of 1976 from Lincoln High School. He spent several summers bartending at Ballards on Block Island. He then worked for 30 years in the elevator industry.

Steve was a man with a heart of gold-kind, loyal and generous to everyone who knew him. The only thing that Steve loved more than baseball, basketball, and golf (he made a hole in one!!) were his 6 boys. He is survived by Patrick, Andrew, Sean, Matthew, David and Daniel. He is also survived by his 3 sisters, Lauri, Nancy and Jeni, 6 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews that absolutely adored him.

Steve's legacy is one of love, strength and kindness. He was the best. A Celebration of Life will be held on December 6, 2025, 12-3 at Bogey's-Fairlawn Golf Club, 3 Sherman Avenue, Lincoln. Donations can be made to The Boys and Girls Clubs. Please specify Cumberland Lincoln Club in memory of Stephen Gibbs or Boys & Girls Clubs P.O. Box 7505 Cumberland, RI 02864

My first recollection of Steve gies"goes back to late in 1978. I was new to Lincoln having just been appointed Director of Parks & Recreation for the Town. I was at the olde middle
School gym to observe and evaluate
the players who had registered for our adult basketball league. They rotated through a series of pick up games. I was armed with a clipboard, a 4 colour ink pen and a list of the guys who had signed up. I would use the info to create six balanced teams.
A few of the local legends, aficionados and master hoopsters kindly perched around me to help with identifications in addition to their own input.
One of the players on the court caught my eye. He had excellent shooting range and put on quite a display. At that time he may been considered "a Gunner." In addition he threw some snappy passes for good assists that were always proceeded by a feint tilt of his head. He was a strong handed rebounder.
As a result of his competitive exertion he produced large amounts of perspiration which saturated his red hair and made it very vibrant adding to the display he put on .It topped off his game. I inquired of the experts around me ..
¿Who´s the guy with the red hair? They all responded with a barrage of info
"¡He´s Steve Gibbs; Gibbsy; played for 3 yrs for Lincoln High; made All Blackstone Valley; played a year at Davis Tech for Gaskins; and and
He only has ONE EYE. !! "
He had lost it in third grade when someone threw a Rat Tail Comb at him.
It can´t be true I thought. You need real depth perception to play the way Gibbs just did.
Sports is a 3-D challenge
oHe made the All*Star Teams in the league every year.
oGibbsy worked a few summers in Parks Maintenance alongside Muggsy, Moose, JB,Bob G and Babe Hagen. He never sweated on that job the way he did on the basketball courts(LOL.)
oSteve coached his son David´s team The Squeeze in YouthHoop..
He played Dos Amigos forever.
NEXT TIME YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO TAKE A SHOT WITH A BASKETBALL CLOSE AN EYE.
AND GIVE STEVE GIBBS A WINK.
