Stephen McGratty Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chas. Verheyden, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Warren on Nov. 11, 2023.
Stephen (Steve) McGratty, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 8, 2023. Stephen was born January 27, 1943 in New York, New York to Edward and Catherine McGratty (Dillon).
Stephen was the beloved father to Therese (Michael Schrage), Stephen Jr., Shannon (Kevin Brophy), and Christopher (Stacy Viniello), who along with their mother, Therese, raised their four children in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. Stephen was also the grandfather ("Gramps") to Ryann, Mackenzie, and Kevin Brophy, and Caitlin and Colin McGratty. He was the loving brother to Edward McGratty (Marcia Fredericks), and was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Constance (James Glynn).
Stephen grew up in New York City where he attended St. Ignatius Loyola School, and then in 1957 at the age of 14 moved to Michigan, where he graduated from University of Detroit Jesuit High School in 1960. Stephen graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1964 and earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation (CFA) in 1974. Stephen also served in the U.S. Army Reserves and received an honorable discharge in 1973.
Steve began his professional career at Comerica Bank, where he worked in the Trust Department for 25 years, and then at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation as a senior investment manager for 18 years until his retirement in 2011. As a philanthropic organization, Steve's efforts went on to help countless charities and persons in need, speaking to his character and priority of giving back to those less fortunate.
Stephen was also a devoted family man who never missed one of his children's games or school activities, and was always recording family videos that have provided a lifetime of memories. Stephen also had his passions – he loved the game of golf, enjoyed the camaraderie with his bowling leagues, was gifted at and had an ear for the piano, and always was up for a game of cards. He also had tremendous faith, traveling to Medjugorje, and was an active volunteer with the Jesuits at Colombiere for many years.
A memorial Mass to celebrate Stephen's life will take place on Saturday, November 25th at 10 am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan with visitation beginning at 9 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Colombiere Center (9075 Big Lake Rd, Clarkston, MI 48346; Colombiere.com).

I first met Steve at the College of the Holy Cross when we were both in our 3rd and 4th years and we became good friends. Then we discovered that we were both intending to enroll at law school at the U of Michigan, so we arranged to become roommates for the first two years. We shared many experiences, participated in the social life at the same law fraternity, shared our mutual love of the piano in the Dining Hall, and sweated through the course load together.
Steve was an usher in our wedding party and we continued to share our life experiences throughout our careers, and shared visits in Cleveland, Grosse Pointe, and more recently in Naples. I recall fondly meeting "Muffin" when she was a charming young girl, (she still is charming, of course) and spending time with him and Therese at their Grosse Pointe home. He always spoke fondly of his sons and daughters and their families.
It was my distinct privilege to know Steve and all his family. He will never be forgotten by me or by anyone who knew him.

Steve was, in his own words, "my best customer", a sentiment I would have to agree with. I will miss his clever sense of humor. My heart goes out to the family. It was truly a joy to know Steve.

I will always remember how much Stephen loved to play the piano at American House. His kindness to others really stood out. God bless you Stephen
