Stephen Merren Obituary

Stephen P. Merren, 77, of New Hartford, NY, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 10, 1948, in Charlottesville, VA, Stephen was raised in Albany, GA, by his parents, Nancy and David Merren. From an early age, he showed a deep curiosity about the world and the people in it, a trait that would define his life. He went on to study at Indiana University, earning a degree from the School of Music and an MBA from the Kelley School of Business, blending his lifelong love of music with a sharp, thoughtful business mind.

On June 23, 1974, in San Antonio, TX, Stephen married the love of his life, Judy Berger. Their marriage was a true partnership - filled with laughter, mutual respect and unwavering devotion. Stephen cherished Judy deeply and was endlessly proud of their family, especially his daughters and grandchildren, whose activities and accomplishments brought him immense joy.

Stephen enjoyed a successful career as a media executive, leaving behind a reputation for intelligence, integrity and kindness. He was actively involved in his community, serving and supporting organizations close to his heart, including the Rome Capitol Theatre in Rome, N,; Temple Emanu-El of Utica, NY, where he served on the boards and Stage II Community Theatre in Utica, NY. In recognition of his commitment to the arts and community service, he received a 2022 New York State Senate Commendation Award.

A gifted and passionate musician and actor, Stephen loved opera and could often be found at the piano or playing the flute or on-stage bringing stories to life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a natural storyteller, always eager to hear about others' lives and to share stories of his own.

His interests were many and varied: schnauzers, cruising, golf, Judaism, faithfully following the Atlanta Braves and Indiana University sports and most of all, spending time with his family. Above all, he loved cheering on his grandchildren and being present for the moments that mattered.

Stephen is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Merren; daughters, Lisa Goldblatt (Lipaz Baum) and Jennifer Shapiro (Jeremy Shapiro); and his cherished grandchildren, Emma Goldblatt, Ben Goldblatt, Joseph Shapiro and Evan Shapiro.

He was predeceased by his parents, Nancy and David Merren; and brothers, Michael and Joel.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at 9 a.m., at Temple Emanu-El, 2710 Genesee St., Utica. Interment will be in Temple Emanu-El Cemetery. The family will be sitting Shiva on Sunday, December 28, Monday, December 29 and Tuesday, December 30, from 6-8 p.m. at their home in New Hartford.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who offered care, friendship and support to Stephen and Judy over the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations, in Stephen's memory, may be made to the Rome Capitol Theatre or Temple Emanu-El.

Steven and I were in AEPi Fraternity together at Indiana University. We only had about 60 brothers so to this day many of us are still very close. I loved the substance of his obituary. Married to a piano teacher, I can totally relate to his love of music and theatre. Beautifully, I can see that Steve always put family before all else. He will be missed but his legacy will continue through his children and grandchildren.

We had the honor of working back stage when Mr. Merren played Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof." I am certain the young people who worked on that show came away with a new vision of a work ethic and a deeper understanding of Judaism. We remember and honor his work, and extend our condolences to his family and friends.
