Stephen Powers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Beverly on Mar. 8, 2026.
It is with great sadness that the family of Stephen J. Powers announces his passing on March 5, 2026. Born in Lynn to the late Lawrence and Mary (Gannon) Powers, he was raised and spent most of his early years in the Ryal Side neighborhood of Beverly. He was a graduate of St. Mary's Elementary School and Beverly High School. He went on to study electrical design engineering and drafted early pocket calculators before moving on to design high voltage power systems at various companies including Varian Extrion and Kaiser Systems, Inc., of which he was a co-founder.

Steve was a man of faith, a devout Catholic, and a parishioner of St. Margaret's of Scotland Church for many years. He raised his family and spent most of his adult life in Beverly Farms, enjoying the village community and the ocean at West Beach. He spent many mornings walking the beach with his cherished dogs as well as fishing and lobstering off its shores in his small boat with family and friends.

Steve's interests were many and varied. His love of golf began at Kernwood Country Club, caddying alongside his older brother Larry. He was an avid scratch golfer and longtime member of Wenham Country Club and the Farms Golf League. During his tenure, he won the Club Championship on three occasions, all in his sixties, and made a remarkable 14 holes-in-one. After retirement, Steve joined the ground crew at WCC and could be found in the early mornings cutting the greens he commanded during play. He loved tending to his vegetable garden, cooking, woodworking, and cheering on Boston sports teams. During the past 4 years, Steve had resided at Brightview Senior Living where he took pleasure in playing pool, Rummikub, cribbage, bingo, concerts and lunch outings with friends.

Steve was the devoted husband of the late Marguerite (Pej) Powers with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. He was the beloved father of Beth Powers and her husband Derek Rae of Beverly, Carole Powers of Sommerville, and Michael Powers and his wife Michelle of West Roxbury. He was the proud and devoted Gramps to Marykate Powers. He also leaves his brother-in-law Thomas Hannon, many nieces and nephews, and Brightview friends. Steve was predeceased by his brother Lawrence Powers, in addition to his in-laws Eileen and Gelean Campbell, John and Mary Jane Hannon and Dr. Julie Lam.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 672 Hale Street, Beverly, on Thursday, March 12th at 11am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Steve's memory to: St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.
