Stephen E. Reed, 74, Bonita Springs, Fl., formerly of Warwick, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Mary E. (Gagnon) Reed. Born in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of the late Phillip E. Reed and Nellie O. (Oculich) Reed. He was proud to be a direct descendant of the Rev. Philip Embury, first Methodist Pastor and Preacher in America, as well as Roger Burlingame and Mary Ann Lippett who arrived in America in 1631.
Stephen graduated from Warwick Veterans High School and was a star tennis player. He went on to achieve his bachelor's degree at URI in 1972, then served in the US Army at the local Coventry NIKE missile site. Upon completion of his service, he became a History teacher in the Warwick School System, positively impacting the lives of thousands of students. He also became a prominent coach of the boys tennis and football teams for many years. After his retirement in 2002, he served as President of the Matunuck Beach Trailer Association for 15 years. In 2006, he helped re-establish the Scituate (RI) High School football program. Stephen and Mary eventually settled down in Florida at the Hunters Ridge Golf and Country Club, where he played golf to his heart's content. Throughout it all, family was the cornerstone of his life, and he spent every moment supporting and loving his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Stephen is survived by his loving children, Mark E. Reed (Lisa), Lindsay E. Stewart (Douglas), Thomas G. Reed (Jen) and his cherished grandchildren, Sullivan Stewart, Griffin Stewart, Evelyn Reed, Macklin Stewart, Cooper Reed, Harper Reed, Stella Reed, and Lennox Reed.
His Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 10:00AM at THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick. Interment will take place at The RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, from 4:00PM-7:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, Ks. 66675-8516.

Steve was a great football coach for us in high school, but an even better man. I always enjoyed seeing him and talking to him whenever I got the chance. Rest in peace, Coach General. You will be missed.

Steve was a blessing to me his last year at Hunters Ridge. I golfed with him. We did not know each other very well but he made it an opportunity to ask about me, encourage me and give me golf tips. He always had a smile and a friendly greeting.

Steve was a super friendly guy. He spent his early years in Natick Ma and I lived in the neighboring town of Framingham. We talked sports between the towns. He knew all the players I remembered playing
Football against. Steven will be missed.
