Stephen (Steve) Michael Schrum passed away at his home in Nevada on December 20th surrounded by his family.
Steve was born on February 7, 1946, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, IA. He was the third of seven children born to Elroy and Darlene (Boeck) Schrum. He attended school in Manning, IA and graduated from there in 1964. He later attended computer school in Des Moines, IA.
He met Marilyn Quick while he was working at Manning Heating & Sheet Metal and she at Manning General Hospital. They met through good friends Art and Agnes Rauch. Steve and Marilyn were married on September 21, 1968. They lived in the Minneapolis area their first year of marriage and then moved to Nevada in 1969 where he began his career at Donnelley Marketing. His final years were spent working at McFarland Clinic in Ames.
Steve and Marilyn had four children – Jonathan Schrum of Nevada, Jennifer (Marty) Chitty of Nevada, Jamie Schrum of Ankeny, and Jill (Matt) Rhodes of Nevada; five grandchildren – Mary (Austin) Combs, Matthew and Reagan Chitty, Ayden and Carson Rhodes; great grandchildren – Calvin and Elliot Combs.
Steve served on various committees at church. He had many interests and especially loved his fishing trips to Canada and other places with family and friends. Golf and poker games were enjoyed with his Donnelley friends. Steve was good at photography and that is why it was hard to find pictures of him because he was always taking the photo. He liked to smoke and barbeque food for his family. His mom was glad when he gave up riding his motorcycle.
Steve was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor. He was like a second dad to Marilyn's daycare kids.
Steve is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends along with his siblings – Sharon Kelderman, Sue (David) Rauch, Sandra Moeller, Skip (Coleen) Schrum, and Sheila Schrum; in-laws, Ted (Dee) Quick, Karen Pounds, Allen (Darcy) Quick, and Janet Quick.
Steve was preceded in death by both his and Marilyn's parents, brother Stanley, brothers-in-law Keith Kelderman, Dale Moeller, and Jamie's fiancé Dave Saxton.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 23 at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior at the First United Methodist Church, 1036 7th Street in Nevada. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memory Gardens in rural Nevada. Casual attire is requested. Luncheon in the church fellowship hall will follow the burial.
The family of Steve Schrum thanks you for your prayers and kind expressions of sympathy.
