Obituary published on Legacy.com by Metropolitan Funeral Service - Portsmouth Chapel on Aug. 7, 2025.
Stephen Stephenson, affectionately known as "Steve," entered eternal rest at his home on August 4, 2025, after three years of declining health. Born on October 10, 1958, in Murfreesboro, NC. Steve was the son of the late Ulysses and Margaret Beatrice Bishop Stephenson. Steve attended Northampton County and Portsmouth Public Schools. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.
Steve accepted Christ at an early age and attended Macedonia AME church in Severn, NC, with his grandparents, Hugh and Sarah Stephenson. From an incredibly young age, it was apparent that Steve shared many of the attributes that were characterized by his grandfather, Hugh Stephenson, and his father, Ulysses. Just like the two of them, Steve displayed versatile gifts with his hands. Sometimes teased about the roughness of his hands, Steve turned teasing into amazement on numerous job sites. He had the knack to craft everything in various areas, including architectural design, HVAC services, electricity, plumbing, roofing, painting, art design, carpentry, engine repairs, and more. Steve was a role model for a "jack of all trades" and the one whom many turned to for several years when something needed to be analyzed, built, diagnosed, replaced, or repaired. Steve's natural abilities were referred to as an inspiration for others. Steve kept things adventurous as a teenager at home. He loved animals and often brought them home as new family members, such as turtles, dogs, and lizards. There was an occasion when Steve turned his car into a home for a family of rabbits. He kept his mother, Beatrice, fussing about the family additions as she worked diligently to maintain an immaculate house. Steve loved to have a good time by singing and dancing. He was a self-made comedian. In just a few minutes in his presence, one would find oneself laughing at his great sense of humor and charming wit. People were drawn to Steve immediately because of his infectious smile, demeanor, and playful shenanigans.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, daughter, Brandi Ciji Alvin, and grandson, DeNard Stephenson, Jr. He is survived by the love of his life, his devoted wife, Rebbie Warren Stephenson, with whom he shared 47 years; their children, Denard and Norman Stephenson; his siblings, Paulette Echols, Michelle (Alan) Hackley, Hugh (Aris) Stephenson Ulysess Stephenson Jr and Reverend Rickey Long, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Lisa Warren and Minister Carol Goodman; grandchildren, D'Andre Williams, Destiny Stephenson, Zion Williams, Damien Stephenson; and great-grandchildren, Romelo Stephenson, Keontae Dudley Jr, and Zy'Asia Pegues and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Stephen "Steve" Stephenson will be deeply missed and never forgotten by all who love him.
