Stephen Stern Obituary

Of North Bethesda, MD. Born in 1940 and raised in New Jersey, Steve was the son of Jean Brunner and Milton Stern. Passed away June 20, 2025. Beloved husband of sixty-one years to Rosalind Stern, devoted father of David Stern and Jacqueline Demitz (John). Cherished grandfather of Matthew and Mia Stern and Alexandra and Erin Demitz. Steve was a lifelong learner, earning three Masters Degrees in Business and Engineering from New York University and the University of Pennsylvania Wharton. He spent his career giving back to our country by holding positions in the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and before retirement, serving in the Office of Deputy Under Secretary for Counterterrorism. Steve valued education and spent many years also working as a university professor, guiding and mentoring future leaders. Always an active member of the community, Steve volunteered in various civic associations and at the family's synagogue. With a wonderful sense of humor, welcoming smile and always striving to make people happy, Steve will forever be missed. A funeral service to honor Steve's life will be held at Judean Memorial Gardens (16225 Batchellors Forest Road in Olney, Maryland) on Sunday, June 22 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Steve's name be made to the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science (https://donate.weizmann-usa.org/support-science-b) or the United States Holocaust Museum (https://donate.ushmm.org/6hRw6kqugUOvJLNKCIbD1g2).
