Stephen "Steve" Charles Carroll, 76, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023. He was born in Marine City, Michigan to Maurice and Eileen Carroll. Steve was not a child to be contained. He proved this to neighbors when he made his way to the railroad tracks outside of town and got his tricycle stuck. When questioned if he needed any help, he emphatically, with rather ripe expletives, said he could remove it himself. He would carry that sense of independence for the rest of his life.
Throughout high school, he excelled in football and track and field, especially the pole vault, winning a full scholarship to the Ohio University. Instead, he decided to follow his two brothers into the Marine Corps. He served with honor and distinction, through his travels from California to North Carolina to Virigina to Vietnam. At the end of his military career, he would not be able to pass through a metal detector without needing to be wanded.
His next tour of duty lasted 54 ½ years with his wife Barbara, where he as awarded three children, Kendrick, Jennifer, and Timothy. During the last quarter century, he was blessed with 10 grandchildren, Jennifer had Alex, Tatum, Ryann and Emerson. Timothy and his wife, Lori, gave him Peyton, Timmy, Kiley, Calum, Declan, and Kaysun. Alex and his wife, Holly, gave his first great grandson, Elias; shortly followed by his second, Cooper, from Tatum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his three brothers, Lynn, Fred, and Brian. He is survived by his sister, Susan Moore. Always loved, and we will sorely miss our handyman, mailman, Marine, husband, father, brother, and PaPa.
A service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Frank Zenelock. Military honors will be rendered by the US Marine Corps. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
