Stephen Sumrell Obituary
The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00-7:00PM at Winterville Cremation and Funeral Service located at 113-C W. Fire Tower Road, Winterville, NC 28590.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 12:00 PM at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at 164 Longs Plant Farm Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
Gary, son of the late Howard and Argen Sumrell, was born May 6, 1951, in Pitt County. He attended Greenville schools and graduated from J.H. Rose High School. He joined the United States Air Force in 1970 and served overseas. He enjoyed all kinds of sports, fishing, and golfing. He loved his family and especially his grandson, Stephen. He was an active member of Christ Church in Winterville and served in several areas of ministry. The children knew him as "The Candy Man."
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Sumrell.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dora Forrest Sumrell, of the home; children, Jessica Sumrell Hart and husband, Cleat, of New Bern, and Joseph Dudley Sumrell of Greenville; grandson, Stephen Lee Hart, of New Bern; brother, Douglas Sumrell and wife, Marian, of Evans, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church at 745 Davenport Road, Winterville, NC 28590.

Enjoyed playing golf with Gary many years ago. The foursome was Gary, Buddy, Steve and myself. Good memories.
