Stephen Torbick Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Newbaker Funeral Home - Blairstown on Sep. 13, 2025.
Stephen B Torbick, 73, of Blairstown, passed away peacefully in Overlook Hospital on September 11, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with a rare degenerative brain disease.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 30, 1951, Steve was the son of the late Bernard and Eileen J (Ennd) Torbick. He grew up in Union, graduating from Roselle Catholic High School and Newark College of Engineering ( now NJIT), receiving a BS in computer science in 1973. Steve worked as a systems analyst at Sperry Univac in Montclair for several years before becoming self-employed in 1981.

Steve liked to call himself "a car guy", doing minor repairs and maintenance on his own cars as well as going to classic car shows and auctions. He also enjoyed basketball, both as a player in his younger days, and as a coach for the Blairstown open gym program and for his children's teams. Travel was also a passion for Steve, with Florida and Las Vegas being frequent destinations. But mostly he loved living in Blairstown, his home for the past 34 years, and he loved busting people with his wry sense of humor, something he could do with a straight face.

Predeceased by his parents and many aunts, uncles and cousins, Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Gusti (Tina) Torbick; his children, Gregory and wife Fiona, Jonathan and wife Amanda, Kimberly and significant other Tommy, as well as cherished grandchildren Annabel, Mackenzie, Benjamin, Henry and Zoe. He also leaves several special cousins and many close friends and co-workers.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 20th, from 11 am to 2 pm at Newbaker Funeral Home, Blairstown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of choice.
