Stephen was born on March 24, 1977, in Amarillo, Texas, to Manuel Torres, Jr. and Maria del Carmen (Rodriguez) Torres.
Stephen received the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and First Communion at St. Laurence Catholic Church in Amarillo and the sacraments of Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Amarillo.
He graduated from Caprock High School in Amarillo, where he played football and was a Lance Corporal in the JROTC program. Growing up, Stephen was also active in Boy Scouts and enjoyed camping and spending time outdoors.
After high school, he attended Amarillo College, where he earned a welding certificate. Stephen later worked for the City of Amarillo Street and Drainage Utility Departments and earned his commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Stephen was known for his big laugh, generous heart, and genuine care for others. He deeply valued his friends and coworkers and always made people feel welcome and included. He was often the one asking about others and checking in on how they were doing.
He was also known as a hard worker who valued teamwork. Stephen took pride in his work and was considered a dependable and valuable member of every team he was part of.
A two-time cancer survivor, Stephen faced life’s challenges with strength and faith. He remained rooted in his faith throughout his life and loved being part of his faith community at Grace Church in Amarillo. He was also active in the Amarillo Cancer Survivor Group.
Stephen had a creative side and enjoyed painting and art. His artwork earned second and third-place honors in the Tri-State Fair competition. He was also a proud Texas Longhorn fan and enjoyed cheering on the Longhorns whenever he had the chance. He loved food—especially seafood—and always enjoyed his mother’s cooking and gathering around the table with family and friends. Stephen also loved telling corny jokes, dancing, and bringing laughter to those around him.
Family was at the heart of Stephen’s life. As a loving son and brother, he nurtured strong bonds, celebrated milestones with care and excitement, and was always ready to support and protect those he loved. Above all, he deeply cared for his family and treasured every moment spent with them.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomasa and Abel Rodriguez, Manuel Torres Sr., and Venancia Nieto; his aunt and uncle, Luis and Aurora Torres; and his uncles Cleo Torres, Abel Rodriguez, and Joe Rodriguez; his aunt Gloria Torres-Hunter; and several beloved cousins and extended family members.
Stephen is survived by his parents, Manuel and Carmen Torres; his brother and sister-in-law, Marcos and Anne Marie Torres; his sister and brother-in-law, Eric and Elizabeth (Libby) Pacheco; his sister, Vivian Torres; his niece, Rachel Torres; his nephew, Ethan Torres; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
