CORDELE –
Stephen Baylor Weigandt, Sr., formerly of Byron and of Perry, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 5, 2022. He was 80 years old. All Services will be held on Monday, March 14, 2022. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., and the Funeral will start at 10:00 a.m., both being held at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry. Also on Monday, Interment with Military Honors will be in Andersonville National Cemetery at 12 Noon.
Steve was born on September 28, 1941, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to the late Albert and Katherine Ruth (Graham Cullimore) Weigandt. He graduated from University High School with the Class of 1959. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy, joining the same year he graduated from high school. He was a Flight Engineer for several different aircraft which gave support during the Cuban missile crisis. His time in the military allowed him the opportunity to see many places around the world. After fourteen years of active duty, Steve was medically retired in January 1977. After relocating to Maine, he enrolled at University of Maine – Augusta, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Management. After graduating, he accepted a position with Prudential and held various positions through the years, including Sales Representative, District Manager, and Training Supervisor. During his tenure with Prudential, he moved to Derry, New Hampshire, then to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he retired. Shortly thereafter, he relocated to Springfield, Missouri, and subsequently moved to Georgia to be near his daughter and son-in-law who were stationed at Robins Air Force Base. His hobbies included rebuilding old cars, camping, traveling with his family, and participating in a CB Radio Club in Maine. He was a very kind and loving individual. Steve found Georgia to be quite enjoyable, especially without snow. He loved being outside and continued as an active member of the American Volkssport Association, participating in their walks as often as he could. He volunteered with the Collings Foundation, traveled with vintage aircraft from World War II, and coordinated aircraft tours in various locations across the country. Steve loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and supporting them by attending their various activities. His family was his passion in life, and he will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, Bruce Albert Weigandt; and his first wife, Barbara (Mallette) Weigandt.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Steve are his loving and devoted wife of nearly ten years, Elaine Martin-Weigandt of Cordele; his children, Terry (Weigandt) Joyner, USAF, Ret. (Michael Joyner, USAF, Ret.) of Haynesville; Steve Weigandt, Jr., USA, Ret. (Judy) of Forney, Texas; Ed Weigandt of Utah; his grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as "Grampy," Vivian Joyner, Ashley (Weigandt) Turner (Capt. Will Turner), and Danielle Weigandt; two great grand-children, Hailie Turner and Penny Turner; his sister, Mary Kay (Weigandt) Krisel; his step-children, Travis Martin (Tonya) of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Wendy Martin Cole (Brian) of Cordele; his step-grandchildren, Haylee Grace Cole, Lane Cole, Camden Cole, Madison Watts, and Dr. Darrah Shields; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
