Steve Luse, 79, of Short Gap, died September 8, 2025 at UPMC-Western Maryland. He was surrounded by his family and passed peacefully. Steve and the family were blessed with excellent care and attention from the nurses, staff and doctors at UPMC.
Born February 9, 1946 in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late Robert Clayton Luse and Anna Marjorie (Steinbrunner) Luse.
He was also preceded in death by his precious granddaughter, Alivia Arbogast, and two brothers, Gary and Bradley Luse.
Steve earned his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from West Virginia University, and was a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, having served from 1965-1969.
Steve thrived in his 35-year career as a sports writer for the Cumberland Times-News, retiring in 2007. He dedicated a considerable amount of time covering the area's youth events and Allegany College, and regularly participated in local sports-related fundraising events. He honored area athletes in his monthly Sports Magazine, with a section dedicated to male and female student athletes of the month. He was a local celebrity and everyone knew his name and face. His kindness, calmness and patience was what made him stand out and shine.
He belonged to Calvary Assembly of God-The Grace Place, in Fort Ashby, WV.
He enjoyed playing tennis, bowling, and golf. Through the years he organized local tennis and golf leagues, including co-founding the Grasshoppers Golf League which is still active after 25+ years. He was also a bowling coach at Allegany High School. Steve loved following high school sports, Orioles, Commanders/Redskins, WVU, UMD, and Allegany College basketball. Listening to "oldies music" was another pastime of his.
