Steve Alexander, M.D., (August 23, 1934 – August 16, 2023) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, after a brief illness. He was 88 years old.
The son of Saul R. and Mildred Alexander, Dr. Alexander was born and raised in Passaic, NJ., where he attended Passaic High School. He graduated from Cornell University and studied medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, interned at the Cincinnati General Hospital at the Cincinnati Medical Center, and did his residency training in both general surgery and urology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Upon completing his residency and serving in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army in Korea and at The Pentagon, he joined Dr. Bernard Pinck's urology practice in Passaic, NJ. He was an attending urologist on the staff of The Passaic General Hospital, The Passic Beth Isreal Hospital, and St. Mary's Hospital, as well as a member of the medical staff of The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and a consulting urologist at the Daughters of Miriam Center for the Aged in Clifton, NJ. He also was an Assistant Professor of Urology at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine. During his long medical career, Dr. Alexander held many prominent professional accreditations and positions. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology, a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons, and a member of The American College of Physicians Executives. He served as President of The Passaic County Medical Society and the Urology Society of New Jersey, as well as a member of Congressman Bill Pascrell's healthcare advisory committee.
He was a longtime member of Temple Beth Tikvah, Wayne, NJ, where he served as Ritual Chair, Member of the Board of Trustees, and as President. He was also on the Board of Directors of the YMHA.
Dr. Alexander was an accomplished jazz pianist who performed in the North Jersey/ New York area for many years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Jazz Society and affiliated with the jazz music department of William Patterson University. He shared his love of music and travel with his wife Razie (Roselle) over their long marriage.
Surviving are his wife, Razie, and three children, Heather Alexander Seltzer (Michael), Craig Alexander (Tracy), and Ellen Jaffe; six grandchildren, Liv and Phoebe Seltzer, Sophia and Marlo Alexander, and Lea and Chelsea Cawthorne; and sister Priscilla Alexander, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. Steven Alexander's memory can be made to Temple Beth Tikvah, Wayne, NJ, or a charity of your choice.
