Steven Berge Obituary

Steven Berge
Steven Howard Berge, 71, of Midland, passed away Sunday morning, February 1, 2026. He was born March 29, 1954 in Midland, Son of the late Howard Walter and Angeline (Klozik) Berge. Steve grew up in Midland and graduated from Midland High School. He went on to attend Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree before obtaining his certification in Respiratory Therapy. Always wanting to learn more, Steve went back to school to earn a second Bachelor of Science degree from Mercy College of Detroit in Physician Assistant Studies. This is where Steve found his true calling and worked as a PA at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw for over 30 years. He was highly respected within the medical community for his compassion, commitment, and absolute knowledge of his profession.
In his younger years, Steve enjoyed sailing and fishing, a hobby he shared with his grandfather. He enjoyed the outdoors particularly on warm sunny days. Steve would often ride his bike and treasured taking his granddaughter on many walks. A real animal lover, Steve, had several cherished pets through the years including his adored dogs, Abbie and Gidget and Bogart the cat.
Finding a genuine passion in life is not something everyone finds, but Steve found his at a young age. With his father having been a WWII veteran, Steve grew up with a great respect for the military, both past and present. His collection of military relics was unsurpassed within the area, and he would often travel to obtain more. Steve was owner of the Veterans Recognition Center and Museum, where a sampling of his collection was displayed within historical presentations showing his extraordinary respect for veterans.
Steve is survived by his wife, Laura Berge, whom he married September 7, 1997; his stepdaughter, Emilee (Garrett Brooks-Filek); granddaughter, Lenora Brooks-Filek; brother Karl (Jackie) Berge; sisters, Marcia Demski and Marie D'Felio; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat Hombre.
Funeral services for Steve will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3109 Swede Avenue. His family will receive friends at Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, on Friday from 2-8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Breakthrough T1D for juvenile diabetes or S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) of Clare. All of us at Ware Smith Woolever are honored the Berge family has entrusted us with the care of their loved one.

Very sorry to hear about Steve. I met him over 25 years ago at the SOS. Just saw him, Keith Wilkins and the other members of the Michigan gang at the SOS a couple weeks ago. I'm a retired Army paramedic and we'd always traded "war stories" and talk "shop" at the shows. Great guy and true gentleman. Our condolences.
