Steven Henry Carpenter

Steven Henry Carpenter 73, of Monroe, NC passed away in the comfort of his own home on January 28, 2025. Steve was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, as well as a cherished educator and leader in the community.
Steve was born on March 3, 1951 to Albert (Bud) Angel Carpenter and Harriet Dursin Carpenter in Providence, Rhode Island. He later moved to Charlotte, NC at the age of 5. He graduated from Charlotte Catholic High School in 1969 where he played football, basketball and baseball.
After briefly attending Catawba College, he returned to Charlotte where he met the love of his life, Susan. They married 10 months later. In 1970, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the USS Saratoga during the Vietnam War.
Steve returned to Charlotte Catholic High School and held many roles over 45+ years. He was a teacher and a coach prior to obtaining his Masters Degree in Education from UNC Charlotte. He became the Assistant Principal in 1994 until he retired in 2018. Steve poured his heart and soul into the community through ministry, education, athletics and ongoing passion for helping others.
Steve enjoyed being outside, gardening, working in the yard and maintaining the football field. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, listening to music, working with his hands, woodworking and building things for others.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Susan Funderburk Carpenter; his sons Brian Christopher Carpenter and wife Mary of Amesbury, MA and Corey Scott Carpenter and wife Susannah of Weddington, NC; grandchildren Jake, Gus, Mayme and Fern Carpenter; grandchildren Jack, Henry and Lucy Carpenter; brother Rob Carpenter; sister Jane Carpenter and her children Nikki and Jana.
A service will be held on Saturday, February 1 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Monroe at 1pm. A visitation will immediately follow at Heritage Funeral Home in Weddington until 5pm.
