Steven Cavanaugh Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - East Louisville on Jan. 22, 2026.
Steven Austin Cavanaugh, 71, of Louisville passed away January 20, 2026, after a nearly two-year battle with brain cancer.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pastor, Steve made an impact on countless people throughout a life devoted to Christ and the Gospel.
Born April 21, 1954 in Henderson, Kentucky, Steve grew up in Evansville, Indiana and attended the United States Naval Academy, Union University, and Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary before becoming a pastor. He faithfully pastored churches in Aliquippa and Daisytown, Pennsylvania and Reynoldsburg, Ohio over a 40+ year pastoral career, followed by a retirement career as a chaplain.
He is survived by his brother David Cavanaugh, sisters Terry Wilcox (John) and Kathy Christen; his wife of 44 years, Cris (Gargano), children Jeff Cavanaugh (Andrea), Emily O'Neal (Scott), Abigail Cavanaugh, and Stephanie Cavanaugh Shoemaker (Justin), as well as beloved grandchildren Esther O'Neal, Henry and Rosie Cavanaugh, and Solomon Shoemaker.
Steve's remains will be committed privately at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, in the sure and certain hope of the Resurrection. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on February 6th at Treyton Oak Towers in Louisville with visitation at 10 am prior to the service.
