Steven DuRose, 64, died unexpectedly on Thursday, November 14, 2024. He was survived by his father, Dick and his siblings, Carrie, Tim, and Doug as well as his partner Christy and her son Til. He will also be missed by his nieces, Sophia and Rachel and his nephew Henry.
Steve was born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He spent two years at Ohio State University. After attending a Rose Bowl game, he transferred to the University of Southern California, where he received his BA degree. After college he worked as a mortgage broker and in his spare time formed a garage band, The Carvers.
Later, he moved to Hendersonville and once remarked, "I knew a lot of people in Los Angeles, but here I have more close friends. I love living in Hendersonville."
After playing his guitar and singing here and there, Steve met Josh Dunkin and the two of them formed a duo, The Gathering Dark a popular act that has played at least once in every brewery and winery in the County. Steve was also a member of the Dudes, a group of guys who strummed and sang together in a garage on a weekly basis.
Steve wrote many of the songs he performed including the crowd favorite, "I Don't Know Why I Feel So Bad Today; I Felt Pretty Good Last Night" which gives you insight into his sense of humor. For the last two years he has been the afternoon disc jockey at WTZQ playing oldies under the sobriquet Steve Dee. Among his favorite performers are the Beatles, Elvis, and Creedance Clearwater Revival, which he played almost every day. Steve also co-hosted a program featuring local artists and was the master of ceremonies for open mic night at a local brewery.
Steve and his dad played trivia for several years. Steve was a whiz at trivia and the two-person team, called The Local Farmers was often the winner, beating teams of ten or twelve players. Throughout his life, Steve remained an Ohio State football fan and for more than a decade, he annually went to Columbus to see a game in person.
A Celebration of Life event will be held for Steve at Oklawaha Brewery on Monday, December 2, 2024 at 6:00 pm. It's open to anyone who would like to remember Steve. If you have an instrument, bring it along to celebrate his life.

I was very saddened to hear of Steve´s passing last week.

Steve was kind-hearted, witty and had a refreshing `go with the flow´ demeanor.

We attended several Ohio State games and Cincinnati Reds games in the mid-2000s when he was living back in Ohio for those years. I still remember Steve as a great friend "to catch a ballgame with".

After I moved to Dallas and he moved to Hendersonville, we still occasionally texted about the Buckeyes and the Reds to keep in touch.

I know music was his passion - so rock on, Steve (forever).

My sincere condolences to Steve´s family and friends. Please take care.

I didn´t know Steve that well, but I met him when I came to Oklawaha Brewing to participate in their open mic. Steve was a very gracious host. I ended up coming back several times and each time I found his quiet, respectful presence to be comforting to me while I performed, which is typically stressful for me. Rest in peace Steve.
