KANAAR, Steven – of Flushing, formerly of Muskegon, age 72, died Thursday, April 4, 2024, at his residence surrounded by family. Honoring his wishes, cremation will take place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Flushing Presbyterian Church.
Steven was born October 19, 1951, in Muskegon, to the late Russell and Luella (Case) Kanaar. He attended Grand Haven High School where he received his high school diploma and the Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music where he received a certificate in bible studies. On March 19, 1976, Steven married his best friend, Barbara Funderburg, and together they shared 48 years of marriage. He worked at CSX Transportation as a railroad mechanic and welder for over 20 years and attended the Flushing Presbyterian Church. Steven was a member of the Aerospace Union, the Railroad Safety Committee, the Writer's Group, and he was a caregiver for the Feral Cat Society. He was a quiet, humble man who enjoyed keeping his hands busy tinkering with machines. From cars to trains and planes, antiques to modern models, toy models or full sized, if Steven could make it work, he did. He had a calm nature and often loved to share a good laugh with family and friends. Above all, Steven was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed.
Steven is forever remembered by his wife, Barbara Kanaar; Children: Mark Kanaar, Matthew (Bethany) Kanaar, and Jennifer (Logan) MacAlpine; Grandchildren: Adelle, Micah, Kaden, Lexi, and Ryker; Siblings: Russell Kanaar, Jr.; Joy Wallace, and Kurk (Nancy) Kanaar; Several nieces, nephews, extended family, and wonderful friends. Steven was preceded in death by his parents.
