Steven Serge Mendez, 69, died March 6, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, surrounded by his loving children. He was born November 22, 1953, in Miami, FL, to Sergio and Mary Nell "Ginger" (Smith) Mendez.
Steven graduated from United High School in Laredo, TX, in 1971. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and took some college courses through them.
He worked as a foreman for Midwest Iron and Metal, a corrections officer for the Hutchinson Correctional Facility and as a USMC recruiter.
Steven enjoyed hiking, traveling, playing video games, watching western movies and motorcycles. He loved spending time with his cat, Serge, but most importantly, loved and cherished the time he spent with his best friend, his beloved daughter, Heather. He was a devoted son, father, grandfather, friend, and a very proud Marine.
Steven is survived by: his father, Sergio Mendez of McAllen; sisters, Diane "Lisa" Darling of Denver, Jan Garcia of San Antonio, Debra Phillips of Lawrence; children, Sarah (Todd) Esajian of Kingsburg, Ashley (Robbie) Harris of Hutchinson, Marshall (Morgan) Mendez of Hutchinson, Heather Mendez of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Faith, Shaylin, and Karissa Esajian, Phoenix, Carter and Nova Harris, Argider Mendez; close friends, Thelma and Ken Minium; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Ginger.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Elliott Chapel, with Bishop Quintin Moore officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps.
Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Kansas Honor Flight, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
