Steve Petrick, 72, Minot, formerly of Makoti, ND, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, September 2, 2022, at Trinity Hospital in Minot, following an 11-month medical challenge to recover from cervical spinal cord surgery.
Steven Sanford Petrick was born on April 4, 1950, the son of Sanford and Marvel (Zieman) Petrick, in Minot, ND. He was raised on the family farm south of Makoti and attended school in Makoti, graduating in 1968. Steve enlisted in the Army, Specialist E-4, stationed in Fort Sam Houston, Texas and was honorably discharged in 1971.
Steve attended Minot State University and graduated in May 1976 with a Business-Accounting Degree. While attending MSU, Steve met his wife of 47 years, Elaine (Essler) Petrick. They married on August 8th, 1975, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, in Kenmare, ND. They moved to the family farm in 1978, where they raised their two daughters, Jennifer and Heidi. In the Fall of 2005, Steve, Elaine, and Heidi moved to Minot, ND.
Steve instilled a hard-work ethic in his family. He was a small grains farmer and loved to till the soil, watching his crops flourish and reap the harvest each season. Steve and Elaine also enjoyed working on the farm together, raising a large garden and canning, cooking, and baking with their garden produce. Steve also was a Tax-preparer at his Petrick Tax Business for many years, retiring from this in April 2020.
Steve was a loving and caring father to his daughters, especially advocating for Heidi's unique needs, her special education, medical challenges, and to be accepted by all. He was always interested in visiting with his daughter, Jennifer, about her days of teaching. He was proud that she was a special education teacher, carrying on service to those with unique abilities. He was a family man and enjoyed being with his two granddaughters, Alexis and Brooklyn. He attended many sporting events, school functions, and musical events they were in. Their education was important to him, instilling to study hard, and to lead a life of honesty and integrity. He was proud to be their Grandpa Poppy.
Steve enjoyed the outdoors. He loved his annual hunting trips to the Badlands with family and friends. He loved fishing with friends and family, but especially loved teaching his granddaughters to fish on the family pontoon. When not farming with his son-in-law, Travis, he enjoyed sneaking away for a quiet day of hunting or fishing. They spent countless hours together, on the farm working and sharing their love of the land and beauty of nature.
Steve had an ease of socializing with people of all ages, often filled with his sense of humor, witty jokes, and words of wisdom. He was a humble man, loving, and caring, but never wanted a compliment or to be recognized himself.
Steve was a member of the American Legion Club in Makoti, Makoti Threshers Association, and St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot, ND.
His loving family includes: wife, Elaine Petrick, Minot; daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Travis Miller, Mandan; granddaughters, Alexis and Brooklyn Miller; sisters, Linda (Leon) Borud, Minot, Peggy (Everett) Dobrinski, Makoti, and Sheila (Russell) Flanigan, Winneconne, WI; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sanford and Marvel Petrick; daughter, Heidi Petrick; and Elaine's parents, Felix and Judy Essler.
The family of Steve Petrick would like to thank the therapy staff at Caring Edge and Teressa Brock, and Connie Coleman for their tremendous care of Steve.
God bless the memory of Steven Sanford Petrick!
