Dr. Steven Mark Schreiber, 62, of Pompton Plains, New Jersey, passed away on December 23, 2022, after a six-year-long battle with chronic illness. He was predeceased by his father, Stanley Schreiber, and his mother, Barbara Reiter. He is survived by his beloved family: Maureen and their children, Sarah (and her husband, Zachary), Olivia, Emily, and Abigail; and his brother, Dr. Robert Schreiber, his wife Laurie, and their children, Samuel, Isaac, and Ruth.
Steve (a.k.a. Dr. Schreibs) was born at the original Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains, New Jersey (a birthplace he proudly shared with the great Derek Jeter) on September 5, 1960. A whip-smart troublemaker and maestro on the basketball court, he attended Wayne Hills High School ('78) and graduated at the top of his class; he earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College ('82), was later accepted into the prestigious Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania ('86), and completed his internal medicine residency at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
He began his 30-year-long career in Wayne General Hospital's Emergency Room, where he was a "fierce and amazing" provider and the paramedic medical command doctor, says a former colleague-he was literally who you called in a crisis. He met Maureen at a hospital Christmas party in 1989; they married in 1992 and started their family two years later. (Steve and Maureen separated in 2012, but remained very close friends and devoted co-parents to their four daughters.)
Steve transferred to Pascack Valley Hospital in 1989, where he was the vice chairman of the Emergency Room and an ACLS/PALS instructor until the hospital's closure in 2007; his Pascack Valley team-the dedicated first-responders, nurses, techs, PAs, and attendings-was his second family. He eventually returned to the new iteration of his birthplace, Chilton Hospital; there, he met his "ER bros" (Dr. Andy Dellapi and Dr. Harvey Rosen) and a group of cherished colleagues who supported him during the early phase of his illness. He retired from his career in emergency room medicine in 2016, but continued to work at TKL Research as a principal investigator for medical clinical trials until 2022.
Our dad was a passionate raconteur: He loved to sit at the dinner table and share stories about his days (and nights) in the ER, recounting the good, the bad, and the weird. Needless to say, he didn't raise queasy kids. He was a dedicated baseball and basketball fan (he could give you stats and game highlights from the '70s on the fly) and found so much joy in coaching the latter, especially when one of his daughters was on the court. He loved Maureen's brisket, matzo ball soup, grilled cheese, pasta, egg salad, pastrami sandwiches from the Kosher Nosh, and Dunkin Donuts coffee (medium hot coffee, just milk, no sugar, please!); the Jackson 5, Shania Twain, and the Eagles hit "Hotel California" ("The best song ever made," he'd say); and the news, particularly when he could have fiery debates with his daughters after an afternoon of watching CNN. He treasured his vacations in Cape May, New Jersey, first at Heritage Triangle and then at 906 Whittier, the Schreiber clan's shore house.
We are so proud to be Dr. Schreib's family. He touched as many lives as he saved, and he will always be with us. May his memory be a blessing.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 28, at 11 a.m. in the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, at 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike (at the corner of Mountain Avenue), Pompton Plains, New Jersey. Burial to follow at Our Lady of the Magnificat Church Cemetery, at 2 Miller Road, Kinnelon, New Jersey. After, friends are welcome to sit shiva with the family at their home between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. and on Thursday, December 29, between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m; their address will be provided at the funeral home and burial site.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in his honor.

I only recently became aware of Steve's passing. The news greatly saddened me. Steve and I went through residency together at the Deaconess in Boston in the late 80s. We played golf together back then when we had the time, took in a sporting event or two, and even "acted" in the resident's show together at the end of our junior year. Steve briefly worked with me after training in a suburban Boston ED for a brief time, but then he had to go back to New Jersey to help take care of his mother as I recall. We lost touch after that, but I always remember him to be a wonderful colleague, a good friend and one helluva nice guy. My sincerest condolences.

Dr. Schreiber...Steve...was my favorite ER doc. He was smart, quick, reasonable, passionate, and dedicated. He was also, fun and caring with his coworkers. He appreciated nurses, RTs, Lab, Radiology, attendings, as well as housekeeping, engineering, clerks, transport....just everyone he worked with. He was kind and generous. I am so very sad that he is gone from us. He should have been here a lot longer. My deepest sympathy to Maureen, his children, and all his family and loved ones. I am grateful and proud to have known Steve and worked with him for all those years. Mary Garcia RN.

I have very fond memories of Steve from our days at Wayne Hills HS. Always a gentleman, always a class act. There was never a doubt he would become an excellent doctor. May he rest in peace.
