Sergeant Stewart Thomas Hacker, 22, of Melbourne, Florida sadly passed away on August 5, 2024 after suffering a cerebrovascular accident while deployed overseas.
Stewart was born on January 25, 2002 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He grew up in a happy home with his loving parents, two brothers, and a sister. Following several moves along the way, the Hacker family settled in Melbourne, Florida when Stewart was 10 years old. His family joined the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community where he made many close friends and grew stronger in his faith.
Stewart was home-schooled and participated in numerous sports including baseball, soccer, and football. Stewart truly loved playing football. He played linebacker on the Eau Gallie High School football team for four years. Stewart was a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout. Stewart became an Eagle Scout in 2016.
Immediately after graduating high school in 2020, Stewart enlisted in the US Army where he excelled. He achieved the rank of Sergeant as an advanced combat medic with the 10th Mountain Division. While serving with the 10th Mountain Division, Stewart distinguished himself by earning Air Assault Wings, Airborne Jump Wings, Expert Field Medic Badge, and Ranger Tab. Stewart's many awards and decorations include the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal.
It was as a teen in the youth group at Holy Name of Jesus that Stewart met Madeline Browne, his future wife. They began to date in his last year of high school. Stewart and Madeline knew very quickly that they were made for each other. On May 5, 2023, Madeline and Stewart were married and began their life together at Fort Johnson, Louisiana.
Stewart was deployed with his unit to Poland when he succumbed to the stroke in late July and passed away in early August with his wife by his side.
From his youth, Stewart was everything a man should be: honorable, conscientious, fun-loving, patient, kind, stubborn, and loving. He was a patriot, a soldier, and a man of faith. He made vows to his country, his wife, and God, keeping them to the end. He left us too soon and will be sorely missed. May Stewart, faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Jean Hacker, Wesley and Carol Branning.
Stewart is survived by his wife Madeline; his grandfather Francis Hacker; his parents David and Lori Hacker; his brothers Wesley (Jessica) and Joseph and his sister Mary Margaret and nephew Trevor.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass in memory of Stewart Thomas Hacker at 1 pm on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 3050 N. Highway A1A, Indialantic, Florida. An open viewing will precede his Mass from 12 noon until 1 pm; his eulogy will be shared just prior to the start of the Mass. Burial will be private.

Stewart was one of the finest men I met during my time here at Fort Johnson. Every Sunday, we'd gather at St. Michael Archangel Church, and there he'd be-serene and focused, always with a rosary in hand. It was a reflection of the strength of his faith, which guided him both in and out of uniform. Despite the hardships and demands of our service, Stewart's unwavering belief was a source of inspiration to all of us. His calm demeanor, combined with the joy he found in his faith, always set him apart.

Stewart was more than just a soldier. He was a brother in arms, and like many of us, he carried the weight of service with grace. Yet, it was at the church that we saw the softer, more personal side of him-the side that was deeply devoted to God, his wife Madeline, and the community. His passing is a deep loss, and those of us who were blessed to know him at Fort Johnson will forever remember the quiet strength he exuded, his loyalty, and his profound faith. Rest in peace, Stewart. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

I am privileged to have had the opportunity to serve alongside SGT Hacker. He was a tremendous leader, Soldier, and man! He always led by example and could be counted on to do the right thing and complete any mission no matter the circumstances. He was one of the strongest people I know, and I am honored and humbled to have been his Company Commander. He was without a doubt the best of us in Blackhawk Company 2-4 IN, and his legacy and example will always be remembered! His passing has been difficult for us all, but though we grieve and mourn his passing, without a doubt I know he is in a better place and will ultimately be reunited with his family and loved ones. Stewart, we love you and miss you!

A Fallen Soldier's Prayer Poem
By Kelly Roper

Dear Lord,

The battle is over for me,
My mission to fight is finished,
And my time on earth is over.

Guide me home to you, Lord,
But watch over my brothers and sisters still in the heat of battle.

Protect them, Lord, body and soul,
And if it pleases Your will, deliver them safely to their loved ones, until it's their time to join You in Heaven.

Amen.

I played football with Stewart at Eau Gallie and the example he set of leadership and integrity marked my life and it is something I will continue to carry with me.

Meeting Stewart at football practice, I had just transferred to eau gallie from Melbourne the rival and he was the only person to introduce himself to me and help me feel welcome. We both played linebacker, so he always showed me new moves and techniques and how to be better than the next guy. He is hands down one of the most humble and hard working men I´ve met in my life and I send condolences his wife Madeline. I looked up to your husband when I joined the army.
