Stuart McPherson, age 63, passed away on April 6th at Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family. Stuart was born on December 10th, 1961 in Glasgow, Scotland to Helen and Alexander McPherson, Sr. The family moved to South Bend in August of 1967. He leaves behind two sisters, Helen and Karen of South Bend, a brother, Alex of South Bend and close family friend, Helen Ward. Stuart attended John Adams High School and graduated from Ivy Tech.
Stuart was in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 22 that left him a quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair. This presented many issues for him, but he managed to outlive medically predicted outcomes for several years with the support of his family, who made him a priority.
Stuart was an avid sports fan. He especially loved college football. He was happiest when watching his favorite teams play, critiquing each play while making it clearly understood that he was right and that agreement from others was required. One of his favorite memories was getting to meet and speak with Lou Holtz on a flight back to South Bend. He was a character, quite the comedian and liked to make people laugh. Family and friends will remember him in their own special way. We all shared fun and humorous, free spirited moments with him.
The family thanks the staff at Memorial Hospital for the support they have provided him over the years. They would also like to recognize Starly, his favorite wound care nurse, and Dr. Scott Blickensderfer.
Here is poem that expresses our thoughts much better than we could think of to say at such an emotional time:
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Weep not for me though I have gone into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul's sweet flight.
I am at peace, my soul's at rest
There is no need for tears
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not
The fear is now all gone
Put now these things out of your thoughts
In your memory, I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death
But celebrate my life.
Stuart will be cremated and memorialized in a private ceremony with his family.

This really sucks. Stew you were my pal the one who loved to argue politics with me. The one who always called me names to show our fun arguments.. you had so many challenges, but you would not allow that to stop you from going across town to help a friend, to visit a friend in nursing home , roll all the way to the store when others were to busy to take you right away. your heart was gold but you were mean lol. * if people didn't know you* this really sucks. We were just talking about the last visit to the hospital, you said if you go back you wont make it home. we are all gonna miss arguing /debating love you buddy.. praying for your sibling's and the ones who loved you..
