MONROE TOWNSHIP – STUART RUBENSTEIN passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, at his residence in Monroe Township. He was 92 years old.
Stu, as he was known by all, was born in New York, NY, to Ann (Lazarowitz) and Herman Rubenstein. Stu spent his childhood in the Bronx, went to City College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and then attended medical school at SUNY Downstate.
He married Trudy Ann Karver in 1953 and they were married for 65 years until her death in 2018. After medical school, he and Trudy settled in Brooklyn for several years until he was called by the U.S. Army to serve as a Medical Officer at a base in La Rochelle, France. His wife and his two young daughters accompanied him overseas while he fulfilled his military duties.
When his service was over, he and his family (soon joined by a third daughter) ultimately settled in Montvale, New Jersey, where he opened his solo internal medicine practice. Later on in his career, he obtained oncology training and saw cancer patients along with his other patients. Many of his patients became close friends. Nearly every morning, including weekends, he would visit patients either in the hospital or on house calls. On Sundays, his daughters would wait patiently while he completed his hospital rounds, knowing they could look forward to jelly donuts and "ant cookies," bagels, lox and cream cheese, and comic books upon his arrival home. He was a very caring father and husband.
Stu also served many years as the school/sports team physician at Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, where he was highly regarded. He was a regular at all of the football games. In addition, he was Montvale, New Jersey's Police Surgeon for many years.
Stu was widely known for his sense of humor, deep interest in classical music, and he often spent time in Manhattan restaurants prior to or after seeing operas, concerts, and Broadway productions with his wife and daughters. His devotion to the New York Yankees was steadfast, and he enjoyed taking his children and grandchildren to Yankee Stadium regularly. He was an avid tennis player for most of his life, adding golf to the rotation later on.
Upon retirement in the mid-1990s, Stu and Trudy moved to a community in Monroe Township, NJ, where Stu joined the chorus, played tennis and golf, and continued to make people laugh. Stu loved to play the piano and even after suffering a TBI at age 78, which altered his ability to do many of the things he loved, he still managed to get his daily practice in, as well as continue with piano lessons.
Stu was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Ann; his wife, Trudy; and his brother, Larry.
He is survived by his three daughters, Ellen Rubenstein of Norman, Oklahoma and Burlington, VT, Susan Wompierski of Cinnaminson, NJ, and Lauren Rubenstein of Deerfield Beach, FL. He also leaves five grandchildren, Jeff Schindler, Rachel (Rob) Barush, both of S. Burlington, VT, Jordan (Jackie) Wompierski of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Brad (Victoria) Wompierski of Raleigh, NC, and Lindsey Knowles of Pompano Beach, FL; and his brother, Barry Rubenstein of Orlando, FL. Lastly, he leaves eight great-grandchildren, Ari and Jackson Schindler of St. Albans, VT, Juliana, Jake, and Vivi Wompierski of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Louie and Alden Barush of S. Burlington, VT, and Cora Wompierski of Raleigh, NC, as well as his personal care aide of 13 years, Esther Akurang, and several nieces and nephews.
Stu will join Trudy at the Freehold Jewish Cemetery in Freehold, NJ. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
