Sue Foy Obituary

Sue Rast Foy, of Madison, Georgia, died Wednesday, August 13th at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hunter Foy and her brother Carlisle Rast. Survivors include her two sons, John (Shelly) of Madison, and David (Becky) of Rutledge; five grandchildren, Hunter Foy, Elizabeth Coughlin (Craig), Thomas Foy, Christopher Foy (Taylor), and Rachel DeLoatch (Nathan). She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren, Olive, Addison, and Wyatt Coughlin, and Emmy, Parker, Maddux, and Kadin Foy. She is also survived by her sister, Anne Wells of Madison.

She was born September 1, 1929, in Buford, Georgia, to Olive Mays and John Marvin Rast, but spent her childhood and youth in South Carolina where her father was a Methodist minister. She graduated from Greenwood High School, attended Lander College in Greenwood, and graduated from Greensboro College in North Carolina. She married Hunter Crawford Foy in 1952. They lived in Claxton and Savannah where their two sons, John and David were born, before moving to Madison in 1963. She earned graduate degrees from the University of Georgia and was employed by the Morgan County Board of Education for 27 years, first as a high school science teacher and then as curriculum coordinator and assistant superintendent for the school system. After retirement from the Board of Education she began taking art lessons and found great pleasure in painting and sharing her artwork.

She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Madison where she held various offices and committee assignments through the years; from Chairman of Administrative Board to Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Madison Artist's Guild, The Morgan County Retired Educators, The Historical Society, the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, and the Humane Society. She was an avid reader and bridge player.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She also took pleasure in watching her former students move into their careers and excel in their communities, and she maintained treasured friendships with many of them.

A celebration of Sue's life was held on August 17, 2025 at 2 pm at the Madison First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The First United Methodist Church in Madison or Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.

Deeply regret hearing of the passing of Sue- a gracious, brilliant inspirational person who impacted many lives. My heartfelt condolences to family; especially to my old scout buddy John. When the `Foys´ moved to town many years ago, Madison was fortunate indeed. I remember Sue fondly, respectfully ( even when chemistry lessons were a challenge for one struggling art/music-minded tenth grader. Memory of her time on earth will continue to uplift.
