Sue Carroll “Mollie Sue” Spurlock, 95, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, formerly of Barbourville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 27, 2025. A devoted wife, mother, teacher, and friend, Sue lived a long and purposeful life grounded in faith, compassion, and love for others. Born on October 5, 1930, in Barbourville, Kentucky, to Smith and Ruth Carroll. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse, a humble start that would lead to a lifelong dedication to shaping young minds. Sue obtained her master’s degree in education and was especially proud of developing a self esteem program, even publishing her own book to help instill confidence in children. Among many professional activities, she especially enjoyed mentoring some of her students in the forensics club helping to develop their public speaking skills. Her students will remember her for maintaining a disciplined class room with a commitment to teaching--she quite simply wanted to make them the best.
In 1947, she married the love of her life, Gene Spurlock. Together they raised three sons—Mike, Wayne, and Jerry—whom she instilled the value of education, honesty and hard work. Those who knew her well will remember her love of talking, her gift for storytelling, and her ability to make everyone feel welcome. A proud Christian and active member of First Baptist Church, Sue helped implement and run the successful Pioneer youth program, developing Christian values in many young students. Her passions included reading—especially reading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books aloud to her classes—traveling, shopping, ballroom dancing, and spending cherished time with her grandchildren. Sue was preceded in death by her husband Gene, her son Jerry, and her parents.
She is survived by her sons Mike and Wayne, and by her grandchildren Michelle, Christopher, Kristen and Katelyn, great grandchildren; Cole, Jackson and Shelby, Son in law; Patrick and daughters in law; Carole and Annette. Sue will be deeply missed. She was a true southern lady with a passion for life, teaching, and family. Thank you, Sue, for being our rock.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Sue in spring, in London, KY for family members.
