Susan O. Ball, 71, of Retta, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025. She was born on November 23, 1953. Throughout her life, she brought joy, warmth, and kindness to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Suzy graduated from Elk Lake in 1971. As a young adult, she worked as a butcher at Carter's Market in Black Walnut. She later spent many years bartending—a job she loved, as her social, outgoing nature made her a natural behind the bar. Most recently, Suzy worked as a caregiver, a role that reflected her compassionate heart. She shared that her time with the couple she cared for reminded her of her childhood, especially the stories they told about life on the farm.
Susan was a loving, caring soul whose gentle heart and generous spirit brightened every day. She felt most at peace outdoors. The moment the spring sun appeared, she could be found tending flowers in her own gardens, cemeteries, and even the flower beds of friends and family. In recent years, she spent her winters in Florida, enjoying the warm weather with her daughter. Indoors, she kept busy with countless creative hobbies. She loved watching sports games, painting ceramics and wooden boxes, sewing, and making arrangements from dried grasses—just to name a few. Whatever she created, she always had someone special in mind.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Shantel Gamble of Tavares, FL; her cherished grandchildren, Taylor Goff of Montrose, PA and Neil Gamble of Kingsley, PA; her dear sibling, Reid Carter of Stevensville, PA; her loving niece and nephew, Danielle Carter of Retta, PA and Anson Carter of Tunkhannock, PA; and her great-niece, Malorie Johnson of Friendsville, PA. She is also survived by countless friends whose lives she touched. Her family meant everything to her, and she poured endless love into every moment spent with them.
Susan was preceded in death by her son, Dustin Ball; her parents, Jane and Orell Carter; her sisters and spouses, Cheryl (d. January 9,2016) and Lawernce Wiles (d. November 1, 2008) and Bethel (d. October 22, 2010) and Charles Dodge (d. May 15, 2019); and her nephew, Rob Wiles (d. September 2, 2023). Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, kindness, and creativity will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were blessed by her warmth.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hunts for Healing, 3 Coburn Hill Road, Laceyville, PA, 18623; a local organization supporting Veterans.
A graveside service will be held at Overfield Cemetery in Meshoppen, PA, on Friday, November 21, at 1 PM. A celebration of life will be held on, Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM, at the Meshoppen Rod and Gun Club at 517 Byrd Hill Rd Meshoppen, PA, 18630.
May the memories of her continue to bloom in the hearts of those who loved her.
