Susan Day
West Bath
Susan L. Day, 64, of West Bath passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 5th, 2025, surrounded by family. She was born April 25th, 1961 in Biddeford, Maine, the 5th child of 7 born to David and Adele Letellier. She grew up in Saco, graduated from Thornton Academy, and started her working career in Sales and Customer Service.
Sue's Sales and Customer Service career began at Zayre's Department Store in Saco working in the jewelry department. A few years later she realized her dream of working at UNUM Insurance Co where she was employed for 21 years in various positions ultimately ending her tenure there working in customer service, handling employee insurance enrollments for UNUM clients. After being laid-off at UNUM, she worked as a Patient Service Rep for several doctor offices in Brunswick. From there she went to work at Walmart in Brunswick as a sales associate in the Jewelry and Women's Clothing departments for 5 years before retiring at age 62.
The greatest joy of Sue's early adult life was bringing her son Brian into the world and raising him until he joined the US Army at age 23. Sue and her son enjoyed many interests and hobbies together including fishing, boating, camping, snowmobiling, games, candlepin bowling, cookouts, and family gatherings. Sue had a very competitive spirit especially when it came to fishing and bowling. She was always trying to catch the most and largest fish and get the highest bowling score to claim bragging rights in the stories she told about her adventures with Brian.
In October of 2008, Sue was introduced to Gary by a mutual friend which started an enduring relationship. They married in October 2013 at the Cundy's Harbor Community Hall attended by many friends and family. Sue developed a very close relationship with Gary's parents, brother Joe and wife Brenda and with Linda and Rick Koch. Sue's competitive spirit continued on in many weekend gatherings for games of Dirty Marbles, facilitated by copious quantities of strawberry margheritas and laughs around the game table. Sue and Gary enjoyed many kayaking adventures on Quahog Bay in Harpswell with Joe, Brenda, Rick, and Linda where she soaked up the sun, enjoyed the kayaking activity, and gathered sea shells and sea lavender to make wedding center pieces. She enjoyed fishing for mackerel at the mouth of the New Meadows River and especially enjoyed the rivalry with her father-in-law Stewart over who caught the most. Bass fishing on local mid-Maine lakes was another of her favorite activities and was enjoyed at times with just Gary or with Joe and Brenda along. Sue enjoyed cooking and family gatherings and was renown for her seafood chowder among other specialties. In the winter months Sue enjoyed snowshoeing with Brenda and Linda. The arrival of each of Sue's grandchildren brought about trips to see each newborn. Leo was born in North Carolina so a road trip was made to see him. Mackayla was born on Oahu Hawaii December 30th 2015, so a 2-week trip was made there to meet her. Sue and Gary flew out to Hawaii in mid-January 2016 and enjoyed many adventures there including whale watching, touring the entire road system of the island, visiting Dole's pineapple plantation, hiking the Ka'ena Point trail to see the albatross colony at the end, and an early morning swim with sea turtles in Paradise Cove. Owen was born in Newport News Virgina, so another road trip was made to see him. She tried to be there for the birth, but like the other two of Brian's children, he came early and she missed the birth by about 8 hours. Brian is now finishing his 20-year career in the Army at Fort Drum in upstate New York, so Sue and Gary have been visiting there 3 to 4 times a year to spend time with Brian and his family. She's toured Boldt Castle in Alexandria Bay and ridden the Maid Of The Mist at Niagara Falls as well as enjoying time with her family. Brian would often queue up some of Sue's favorite tunes on his stereo and a dance party would ensue with everyone joining in and having a good time.
Sue is predeceased by her grandparents Hermenegild and Irene Letellier, George and Rose Bragdon, her parents David and Adele Letellier, sister Terry Letellier, and cousin Terrie Stephens-Fogg. Sue is survived by husband Gary Day, son Brian Noel his wife Jessica and their children Leonidas age 12, Mackayla age 9, and Owen age 6, brother Conrad and his wife Elaine, brother Michael and his wife Donna, sister Rachel Letellier, sister Priscille Dyer and her husband Dennis, brother Donald and his wife Laura, brother Thomas and his wife Robin plus may cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial will be held at Cote Funeral Home in Saco on Friday, July 11, 2025. Visitation will be from noon to 1pm, with a service immediately following. Sue is being cremated and will be buried at a future date. A luncheon will be held following the service at the American Legion Hall at 508 Elm St in Biddeford.
