Susan Fort Fox, age 69, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Duke Hospital.
She was born July 3, 1954, in Kinston, NC to Graham and Helen Hodges Fort. Susan grew up in Kinston, North Carolina, and graduated from Kinston High School in 1972. She then went to Lenoir Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for 3 years, graduating in 1975. Susan decided to further her education and attended Lenoir Community College and then East Carolina University for her Baccalaureate in Nursing. While at Lenoir Community College, she met Gerry Fox, and they were married in 1976. Susan and her husband met on the tennis courts, and she enjoyed tennis for a great part of her life. She worked in Women's Health at Lenoir Memorial Hospital and then Lenoir County Health Department. After her two children were born, Susan went to Emory University in Atlanta to become a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. During the remainder of her nursing career, she worked at the Lenoir County Health Department until her retirement in 2008.
Susan was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Kinston, NC. After retirement, she continued to touch lives through the many roles she filled volunteering at St. Mary's. Susan was cherished and adored by her church family.
Susan was the heart and soul of our family. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Nana and enjoyed supporting her grandchildren in their many activities. Susan was a gentle and kind friend and touched the lives of so many. She had a tender heart towards animals and adopted many dogs over the years, including her most recent dog Missy. Through this passion, she became a dedicated supporter of the local SPCA.
Susan is survived by her husband of 47 years, Gerry Fox; her daughter, Tracy Atilla, husband Aydin and children Neslo, Leyla, Beyza, and Kuzey of Key West, FL; son, Marty Fox, wife Heather and children Bennett, Brody, and Mackinsey of Greenville, NC; brother Carrow Fort of Raleigh, NC and nieces Jessica Fort of Seattle, WA and Katie Fort Boyd of Raleigh, NC.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Graham and Helen Hodges Fort.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Kinston, NC on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 2pm. A reception to follow in Moseley Hall.
Her departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by her entire family and countless others who loved her deeply. The family genuinely appreciates your support during this difficult time and asks that you make contributions in her honor to the Lenoir Country SPCA in lieu of flowers.

I met Susan years ago while I was working at JCP. Anytime I saw her she remembered me and we would talk with each other awhile. She was always so nice and friendly, it always brightened my day to see her. Such a gem of a lady. May God bless and comfort her family.
