Susan Heslep Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Apr. 5, 2009.
HESLEP, Susan Haumersen, gracefully passed away April 2, 2009 in her home. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth, and son, Benjamin. She is also survived by a brother, Brian Haumersen of Mendham, N.J., his wife Sue, and their four children, Andrew, John, Tom, and Gracie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Owens Heslep of Richmond, Va., and her parents, Richard and Marian Haumersen of Cambridge, Md. Susan was a graduate of Cambridge High School and then Duke University where she majored in English and was a member of Pi Beta Phi, with whom she remained active throughout her life mentoring and working with prison literacy programs. After college, she was a volunteer with AmeriCorps VISTA in Salt Lake City, continuing her passions for education and volunteerism. She later received her Master's in Education from Antioch University New England. Susan, a devoted educator for over 30 years, had her first teaching assignment in Manchester, New Hampshire after which she and her husband moved to Richmond where Susan was a teacher at Maggie Walker and then Varina High School where she taught until she recently retired. Her impact on the Varina community was vast; during the course of her time there she taught all levels and grades of English including Advanced Placement classes and American Studies, a course which she helped to develop. She was a respected leader in her field, serving many years as the English department chairperson and guiding countless new teachers along their paths. Over the years, Susan sponsored too many extracurricular activities to list, serving as a class sponsor, building floats, organizing proms, supervising fundraisers, and always eagerly volunteering to be a part of her students' lives, both at Varina and beyond. Susan was a fierce advocate not only for her students, but for the English language itself. Susan will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and many former students who loved her dearly. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 8 at 10 a.m. in the Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond. She and her husband both believed strongly in charity; memorial donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, Ala. 36104, or the Central Virginia Foodbank, 1415 Rhoadmiller Street, Richmond, Va. 23220.

Elizabeth and Ben,
I worked with your mom for five years from 1995-1990 at Varina H.S. but continued to be her friend and see her and you guys at your annual Christmas gathering. She was everything that her Memorial Service commemorated. The big chapel on the U of R campus represented the bigness and fullness of her heart. The church was full of light and your mother's light was shining on all of us. Her wonderful "cackle" will always be heard in my head as I think of her wonderful sense of humor, the kindness she expressed to me and the friendship she always offered. You are both fortunate to have had Steve and Susan as parents; hold on to your wonderful memories as you continue to experience their loss.

Mrs. Heslep was a wonderful English teacher! I will remember fondly how her smile and laugh always filled the room.

Mrs. Heslep was always extremely kind, generous and supportive of me. Her daughter and I have been friends since middle school. She would always go out of her way to accommodate me in so many ways, whether it was feeding me at her home, carpooling me around town or attending my school plays. I will always particularly remember a hand-written note that she mailed to me in my junior year of high school right after seeing one of the plays I was in. This wasn't long after her husband had passed away and she took the time to tell me how much she enjoyed my performance in particular and that it made her feel so happy and took her mind off of the difficult things she was facing. She went on to encourage me and thank me for making her laugh. Although I was a mediocre actor, she took the time out of her day, during a difficult part of her life to make me feel special and to support me. She was one of the most self-less people I have met and was uncommonly giving. I felt like I could have asked her for anything and she would have given more. I will never forget her warm smile and distinct laugh.

I only had the opportunity to meet Susan on a few occasions, as I was new to her neighborhood. Even when feeling poorly, she would go out of her way to greet me, ask how the puppies were doing - or wave as I drove by. She was the very first person to stop by my new home and welcome me to the neighborhood - a heartwarming thing after a long day of moving in the hot sun. We spoke often about English & literature. I was an English major in college, too - and she loved that. Over the course of our conversations I also had the opportuntity to hear all about her children that she was so very proud of. I know she will be missed greatly.

Mrs. Heslep was a wonderful teacher. She was my English teacher Junior year at Varina High. At times I was afraid to walk in class because I didn't know how her mood would be that particular day. Needless to say, she was in a good mood until students would start acting up, then she would slam the text book down and turn red...that's how you knew she was mad. Mrs. Heslep you will truly be missed and thank you for being one of the best teachers at Varina High.

Ms. Heslep was my 9th grade English teacher at Varina in 1990..she was the sweetest person I have ever met. I remember she invited my friend and I over to her home for lunch when we first started driving because we both had her for English. Her children were very small then with such beautiful red hair. Her husband welcomed us like he knew us forever. She is the one who started me wearing my glasses on top of my head and everytime I would break a pair I would think about her because she started me doing that. I will miss her..and to her children my prayers go out to you.

Elizabeth and Ben, Your Mom was so wonderful and I am truly sorry and sad for your loss. I got to know her again when she became one of my clients as a sales rep for Merry Maids cleaning service. A wonderful gift you provided for her Elizabeth. I thank you because it gave me the chance to see and know her again. I came to love her very much and she was more than a teacher of my past, but a friend also. She will definitely live on with the influence she had on so many people. She will be dear to me for eternity.

Mrs. Heslep was my favorite teacher in all my years of education. Her teaching style made me appreciate poetry and literature, and made me want to be a better writer. She was also a mentor and someone I looked up to. I'll never forget what she wrote in my yearbook; that even though I would always sleep in her class, I was still one of her favorite students. She had a great sense of humor and could always make her students laugh. I will never forget her.

Elizabeth and Ben,

I see the beautiful thoughts here from neighbors, former students and college friends. Let me add something from another group that cherished time with your mom - her childhood hometown friends. Susan was a sunny presence, always kind and always enlivening things with her infectious laugh and her happy perspective. In the last decade a dozen of us have met each summer for a day just to reconnect. What a loving, generous, strong and vital spirit and how deeply we will miss her! Our thoughts and prayers are with you Liz and Ben.

Elizabeth and Benjamin, my condolences on your loss. She was very special to many of her students during their time at Varina with myself being one of them. Her infectious smile and uncanny wit made reading worthwhile. I had been in contact with her randomly over the past 15 years and always enjoyed hearing her stories. I will truly miss seeing her rosy face and the twinkle in her eye no matter what the circumstances were. I credit her for me becoming the person that i am today. She will always be remembered.

Mrs. Heslep was my 11th grade advanced english teacher 10 years ago, and my prayers go out to her family. She was an English teacher who taught with a sincere love of English and literature, and always spoke lovingly of her children. She was a great inspiration to her students, and every one in the Varina High School community.

Elizabeth & Benjamin,
Words cannot express how your mom impacted so many lives at Varina. My husband Matt had her for American Studies in 11th grade, and even after graduating went back just to see her. She was a wonderful teacher and a wonderful person. We will always remember her smile, and her kind heart. God Bless you and your family.

Elizabeth and Benjamin, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your mom was an amazing woman. She fought til the end. I'll always remember her laugh, that cute chuckle that made you join in. She loved you two very much. She was my 11th grade American Studies teacher at Varina along with Mrs. Givens. What an amazing teacher she was. I'll never forget her. She will always have a place in my heart.
