Susan Leigh Melson, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on
September 3, 2025, in
Lakeland, Florida. She was born on May 26, 1950, to Lawrence
and Margaret Gray, and her life was a testament to the love and care she poured into
her family and home.
Susan was a proud graduate of Santa Fe Catholic High School and Florida Southern
College. She chose to dedicate her life to her family, finding immense joy and purpose
as a homemaker. Her children were her greatest pride, and she cherished the ability to
be there for them every day.
A woman of many talents and passions, Susan was known for her incredible skill in
embroidery, creating beautiful works of art with thread. She was also a gifted writer,
often crafting heartfelt and creative stories. Susan took great pride in her home, keeping
it spotless and welcoming. She loved the simple pleasures of life, including shopping,
enjoying meals out with her family, and watching movies together.
Susan had a deep appreciation for the mountains and a remarkable passion for family
history. She was an avid genealogist who could trace her family lineage back many
generations. This love for her roots also fueled her love for travel, as she often visited
new places to research her family's past. She took great care in her appearance, always
presenting herself with grace and elegance.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved son, Gary Melson, and her parents,
Lawrence and Margaret Gray. She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years,
William Melson; her daughters, Brittany Melson and Kerry (Jason) Johnson; her
cherished grandson, Caleb Melson; her sister, Caroline Krombach; her nephew, Alfred
(Molly) Krombach; and her grandnephews, Aidan, Connor, and Brody. She also leaves
behind many beloved "grand fur babies."
A Mass will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church followed by a graveside
service at Lakeland Memorial Gardens at 11:30a.m.
