Susan Ellen Moxley's call and life's purpose was in service to others. For 48 years, she pursued diverse roles in the nursing profession as she provided the personal care needed for her patients. Driven to excellence, Susan worked hard to meet all expectations while maintaining an outstanding work ethic. Her educational background includes graduation from Galax High School in 1972, coursework at VPISU (Virginia Tech), and a transfer to UVA School of Nursing, where she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing. Her work history as a Registered Nurse started in Charlottesville, VA, and included other facilities in Virginia and North Carolina. Susan's latter years were spent doing case management work for her hospital employers. Through the years she completed many continuing education courses, keeping current on the latest medical trends and research. Susan touched many lives with gentleness, healing and professionalism. Her primary focus was always on her patients and their well-being whether it was in a hospital setting or another facility.
Susan was born in Mt. Airy, NC on February 17, 1954 to David Rex and Muriel Caudill Moxley. As children, Susan and her siblings attended Snow Hill Missionary Baptist Church near Galax. Susan especially looked forward to Bible Schools and enjoyed being active in Girl's Auxiliary. Her spiritual life was very important to her. We remember Susan for her smiles, humor and wit, her laughter, sweet nature, kindness, and compassion for humans and animals. Her generous spirit went over and beyond the call of duty.
Susan is survived by two brothers, David Moxley (Betty), Chapin, SC, Jim Moxley (Mary) of Manassas, VA, and one sister, Patricia Moxley of Galax, VA. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, many cousins, and two very special longtime friends, John and Jesse.
In memory of Susan, please make a monetary donation to the Humane Society or ASPCA, or support a local animal shelter through adoption.
A private graveside service is planned for Wednesday, November 5, 2025 beginning at 11:00am at a family cemetery along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where Susan will be buried next to her parents. Pastor Tim Chrisman will officiate.
To further honor Susan, a Celebration of Life service will be planned at a later date.
Moving forward, smile more often, thank a nurse, help others, and make a difference in the world.
