Susan Maughan Penuel passed away on June 3, 2025, at Rex Hospital. She was born and raised in Raleigh. Upon graduation from Broughton High School, Class of 1969, she pursued a career in state government working for Employment Security Commission until her retirement.
Susie will be remembered for her unselfish deeds of kindness and generosity for her family, friends, coworkers, and church family. She took great pleasure in gardening, sewing, baking and especially spending time at Atlantic Beach during the summertime.
Susie was proceeded in death by her mother, Edna Whitley Maughan; brother, Ariel Leishman Maughan, Jr. (Joe) and her husband Elton Ray Penuel. She is survived by her son, Jonathan Howell Penuel, and granddaughter Olivia Raye Penuel. She is also survived by her sisters, Jane Whitley Maughan, Betty Maughan Parker (Chuck), Teeny Maughan Massey, sister-in-law Eunice S. Maughan and additional nieces and nephews whom she adored.
The family will hold a private celebration of life service followed by a private burial on June 12, 2025.
Our family is grateful for the compassion and care that Susie received at Rex Heart & Vascular Hospital during her illness.
